'Grease' is the word for Midcoast thespians

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

TOPSHAM - Midcoast Youth Theater's fourth annual teen summer production will be "Grease," with shows scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 24-25, and 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Mt. Ararat High School.

In this exuberant 1950s rock 'n' roll musical, hip greaser Danny Zuko (Christian Nadell) has a summer romance with goody-two-shoes Sandy Dumbrowski (Kristin Korda). At summer's end, they go their separate ways, thinking they'll never see each other again. But to their mutual surprise, Sandy turns out to be the new kid at Danny's school in the fall.

Their attraction is put to the test in the raucous world of Rydell High, where Danny presides as leader of the T-Birds, a greaser gang that hangs out with a clique of sassy girls known as the Pink Ladies.

As Danny and Sandy struggle with this predicament, their classmates sing and dance their way through nostalgic tributes to such '50s teen staples as the pajama party, the prom, the burger palace and the drive-in movie.

Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, "Grease" features such well-known songs as "Summer Nights," "You're the One That I Want," "Hopelessly Devoted," "Greased Lightning," and "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee."

The production is directed by Michael Millett and Elaine Perry, with choreography by Elaine Perry, musical direction by Rebecca Beck Atkins of Studio 48 and costumes by Beverly Diller.

Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors. For more information, visit www.youth-theater.org or call 233-3899.
