Bridgton motorcyclist critically injured
Wednesday, July 23, 2008
BRIDGTON - A Bridgton businessman and former Cumberland County sheriff's deputy was listed in critical condition Tuesday night with injuries sustained when his motorcycle struck the back of a car Monday on Route 117, officials said.
Eric "Rick" Marston, 60, of 8 Cottage St. in Bridgton was being treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after the collision involving Kara Thurlow, 34, of 867 Norway Road in Harrison, Bridgton police officer Donald "Mac" McCormick said Tuesday night. A nursing supervisor said Marston's condition was critical.
Marston owns Pegalegpete's Leather at 261 Main St.
He was driving his Ural 2007 motorcycle with sidecar south toward the center of town about 2:30 p.m. when it struck the back of Thurlow's 2006 Dodge Stratus sedan that was stopped to make a left turn, McCormick said.
Marston was thrown from the motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet, he said. He was taken to Bridgton Hospital by United Ambulance and flown from there to Lewiston.
Thurlow went to a hospital on her own for examination of apparent minor injuries, he said.
The car was totaled; the bike had minimal damage.
Sgt. David Hall of the Sheriff's Department reconstructed the accident, which remains under investigation, McCormick said. Also assisting at the scene was Bridgton Fire Department. |

Posted By:y at July 23, 2008 8:42 AM (Suggest Removal) well said up2u! it is a choice not to wear a helmet. many of our choices are taken away from us and that is not right... it is my choice not to wear a helmet... would be nice if the police would uphold the law for people with learning permits NOT wearing a helmet though........

Posted By:David at July 23, 2008 9:51 AM (Suggest Removal) I have been riding motorcycles for 37 years and I am in favor of a helmet law. I don't know if it would have helped Mr. Marston because I don't see any mention of head injuries in this article. Someone said it would be nice if the police would enforce the helmet law for beginning riders. Unless the officer knows the rider personally how would he know if that person has had a motorcycle license for a year?

But all the data gathered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation about helmets support wearing a helmet. So like seatbelt laws, it would save more lives. And that law had to be voted on and enacted to make motorists protect theirselves.

I don't know why, and I suppose it doesn't really matter. Whats done is done, now we can only hope for a fast recovery.
The driver and her son are alright, only minor injuries. And as far as Ive heard, Rick is doing well. So lets just be thankful everyone is alive.

Posted By:Clipper at July 23, 2008 8:26 PM (Suggest Removal) I have never figured out why a person wouldn't wear a helmet. Of course, I also wonder why there aren't seatbelts for all passengers on school buses.
I pray for Mr. Marston and his family in these truly difficult times.

Posted By:o at July 25, 2008 4:33 PM (Suggest Removal) I would like to thank the nurse, and 3 off-duty Ct.firefighters who stopped at the crash, and helped Mr. Marston until the ambulance arrived. My hat is off to you and your kind efforts. I watched in disbelief, as you worked so calm and professional with limited supplies!
