Works by Lewiston-born artist exhibited

Friday, July 25, 2008

PORTLAND - William Manning, a Lewiston-born abstract Expressionist painter represented in museums and galleries internationally, has one large exhibition, "From Here to Eternitime," running concurrently in August at two galleries.

With virtually all of his energetic and expressive work borne out of his attraction for Monhegan Island - high cliffs, deep pine forests and dramatic ocean views - he has chosen to express his attachments to the island in a variety of powerful ways over his 50-year career.

The Jameson Art Group will open its segment of the large exhibition with a reception for the artist from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 31. The Art Gallery at the University of New England opened its portion July 10 on the Westbrook College campus. It runs through August.

The work on view at The Jameson Art Group focuses on the artist's free-standing paintings, which viewers walk around, experiencing the entire piece in three dimensions. These were done during the 1980s and 1990s. Some of the artist's recent works on paper from the 21st century also will be on view.

At the Art Gallery, Manning's featured works are his flat paintings primarily from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as paintings from this decade.

Over the course of his career, Manning's most sustained efforts have been to integrate geometric elements with organic ones. He does so with virtuosic consistency and a color sophistication.

Manning has nearly three dozen works of art in the Portland Museum of Art's permanent collection, as well as others at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, where he enjoyed a solo exhibition in 1995. He also shows at the Anita Shapolsky Gallery in New York City.

The galleries of The Jameson Art Group are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and by appointment. For more information, call 772-5522 or visit www.jamesongallery.com.
