OXFORD - A group of firefighters on their way to training Tuesday night changed course and went to Main Street when fire from a stove engulfed a trailer.

The 6 p.m. blaze produced a fast response from fire crews who were able to save some of the trailer contents although the home was destroyed.

Fire officials said food left burning on a stove was the apparent cause of the fire that burned through the trailer at 788 Main St., in the area of the Oxford Plains Speedway.

The trailer, roughly 12 by 56 feet, is owned by Dawn and Suzanne Lothrop. Oxford fire Lt. Steve Cordwell said the four adults inside when the trailer went up were able to get out to safety.

They called for help and fire crews were there within minutes, from Oxford and from the towns of Paris, Mechanic Falls, Poland, Norway and others.

Some of the firefighters had been enroute to Oxford for training around the time the fire was first reported.

"We had a pretty good contingent of people there because of that, and consequently, it was a pretty quick knock down," Cordwell said.

Though the trailer was a complete loss, the occupants were able to save some of their personal items from an area of the trailer that didn't catch fire.

"They did have some salvageable clothes in a back bedroom that didn't burn," Cordwell said.

The American Red Cross was helping the four adults left homeless by the fire, providing them with a place to stay as well as necessary items. Cordwell said all indications are that the blaze was accidental, the result of cooking oil that overheated and caught fire.
