Hate crime probe intensifies

,
Friday, August 8, 2008

RANGELEY - Police are making progress in an investigation into slurs spray-painted on a road, a sign and a six-wheeler belonging to a Jewish family.

Police officer Brian Hughes was called to Round Pond Development on Saturday by the development's owner, who discovered the words "white power," the letters KKK and Nazi swastikas.

Police are treating it as a hate crime and are narrowing in on the time frame and other information, Chief Phil Weymouth said.

House lots in the development owned by the Jewish family are being roughed out but no construction has started.

Police plan to conduct more interviews and go house to house when people return to their seasonal homes this weekend to see if anyone saw anything, he said.

People are coming forward to discuss the matter but no one has been implicated at this time, he said.

"It's unfortunate with the diversity we have in Rangeley, Maine, that this type of thing could even happen," Town Manager Perry Ellsworth said. "It really does not speak well for the community, if someone in this community did it. We will do whatever we need to do to resolve this."

Rangeley PD-get a grip. If this department needs some extra job security, then put in parking meters. Not to reduce the seriousness of a potential hate crime but, this work was more than likely the product of some bored teens on summer vacation. Ask Dixfield PD about the Lisbon 5, just don't ask them how they handled it..........

Punish the creeps who did this! Bored teenagers on summer vacation or not - it's plain wrong and anyone who can give their support to this type of activity deserves to be put behind bars with them!

When are people going to understand any crime is a crime and stop this type of activity now! If it was my home under construction I would stay this is not a town I want to live it - people are too small minded. At least the Town Manager suggested he would like to get it resolved.
