Fire hits Auburn building

,
Wednesday, August 13, 2008

AUBURN - A 2½-story apartment house at 85 Summer St. was heavily damaged by fire early Wednesday morning.

A family on the first floor escaped, according to reports, and no one was living on the upper floors.

There were no injuries, police said.

Thick smoke pouring from the first floor could be smelled for several blocks away. The rear of the building was heavily damaged as firefighters battled flames.

Steve Levesque, who lives nearby, said, "I was at home watching the boob tube and I smelled the smoke. I came out and the flames were shooting way up high in the sky. It was a big orange glow. The flames were high above the building."

The three-apartment house is near the intersection with Parker Street.

The only occupied unit was on the first floor.

Police went to nearby homes on Turner and Summer streets to alert neighbors that they may have to evacuate.

Firefighters from Lewiston responded with equipment and manpower.

As of 1 a.m. flames were still visible at the rear of the wood-framed house.

This story is not funny, Mainetarr. A family is without a home today and all you can think of is something stupid.

Does anybody yet know the cause of the fire? If this fire was caused by a lit cigarette- I think it's time that Maine think about Smoke Free Apartment buildings to protect its tenants. Remember the woman who caused all her neighbors to become homeless last winter because she decided to smoke with her oxygen tank?!?!? I think it's time we wake up and start making some tough decisions...

Who would enforce it? The cops cant go building to building and the landlords won't do it

Smoke free you people never give up trying to force your views on others do you. Thaere are a thousand reasons why this family is homeless this morning and all you can think about is forcing your socialist agenda on others. Can't you wait until this family is at least in another residence before you start pushing your agenda?

Alot of fires are not caused by smoking. The cause should be determined before people start shooting their mouth off about smoking.

Smokefree... Have you taken a look at the classified section of the newspaper?? MOST landlords are already exercising their rights and will not rent to smokers.."Non-smoking" and lots of times it says, "No smoking, no pets" It is completely impossible for the State to put a NO smoking law into place within any person's home and expect the police to enforce.. Come on now.. the police have enough to do without going door to door making sure nobody is smoking! Wait and find out the cause of the fire and stop trying to push your anti-smoking crap on people and ASSUMING a cigarette was the cause!!

Cigarettes don't cause every fire. FAULTY WIRING coulda started it. Have u ever thought of that? Can't blame everything on cigarettes. Yeah a few yrs back in a trailor in oxford my cousins husband fell asleep with a cigarette and their oldest son (my cousin) died in the fire. Some fires are caused by cigarettes but not all fires so stop blaming it on cigarettes unless u were the one that dropped it and started that fire. Like I said before it coulda been FAULTY WIRING that caused it.

I didn't say it WAS caused by smoking.. just said it MAY HAVE BEEN. Smoking causes lots of fires in this country, causing many deaths. I know that fires can be caused by faulty wiring.. I had a good friend whose dogs died in a fire that gutted their home- and that fire was caused by a faulty furnace that had been improperly installed. Please learn how to read- and stop twisting my words..

I wasnt twistin ur words I was just stating the facts that noone knows how the fire started. I lost a loved one in a fire caused by a cigarette falling in a pile of clothes when his dad fell asleep on the couch. I was also just sayin it coulda been FAULTY WIRING. Sorry if u thought I was twisting ur words. A lot of comments on here seem like they were blaming cigarettes but I know its just a thought not a fact. SORRY AGAIN

You can't band smoking from everything and everywhere cuz we as smokers have rights too and with statements like make every apartment building smoke free to save others well I for 1 dont lay in bed with a lit butt I sit in bed until its gone and put out. I think every building should have sprinkler systems like this building I live in and it has a big red bell on the outside of the building. The building I live in had a chimney fire several yrs ago so my landlord had sprinkler systems put in. Sprinkler systems would save a lot of these buildings.

Actually, a lot of fires are caused by grilling on the porch, and that one IS preventable. But we really don't know the cause of this fire.

Summer st Old apartment building $50.00 says cause is old wiring!! Probable still had the old fuse box and horse hair plaster!!! Hay We should probable ban freedom and liberty they seem to cause a lot of problems!! people wanting to do what they want, when they want, where they want is really counter productive to the greater good of our common society!! Sounds familar anyway!! Glad everyone got out safe!!

By the way, cigarette don't light themselves and cause fires, irresponsible people cause fires with cigarettes. Like guns don't kill people, people kill people.

by the way the article says nothing abut the fire starting by smoking. Read and reread before you answer. And for the record this smoker's house was burned down when my 90 year old aunt decided it was good idea to start cooking. Maybe we should ban 90 year old women from living in apartments too.
