This is regarding "Neighbors tired of truck debris" (Aug. 6).

I applaud Guy Mahon for speaking up about dangerous debris falling from trucks on Poland Road. Everyone likes to talk about becoming less dependent on gasoline, but try riding your bike to the store instead of driving. From motorists who refuse to stop at painted crosswalks to terribly neglected roads and sidewalks, you're lucky if you return alive in this town.

Last fall my neighbor had to drag a mattress from the middle of Poland Road, and recently I found a large steel pipe in my front yard.

Road safety is an issue that needs to be addressed everywhere in Auburn.

Unfortunately, I doubt Mahon's efforts will matter in the end. Unless you are a big box store looking for a deal on retail space in Auburn, you don't matter to the City Council. I recall a few months ago, hundreds of citizens vocally implored our town leaders not to cut the school budget. They ignored us and cut $250,000 and saved us nothing on taxes.

If you want to open a super-sized retail store in Auburn, I'm sure you'll get lots of support. But our town councilors don't really care about the citizens. If they did, not only would our streets be clean and safe, but our schools and other important resources would be a priority, too.

I'm afraid if you want well-maintained streets, you may have to move to Brunswick.
