FARMINGTON - University of Maine at Farmington President Theodora J. Kalikow has announced the appointment of Philip A. Griswold as the university's new assistant dean of the UMF College of Education, Health and Rehabilitation.

In the newly-created position, Griswold will teach, implement and direct the university's new Master of Science in Education degree program created to develop outstanding educational leaders to meet the needs of western and central Maine.

"We are thrilled to have Philip Griswold at the head of UMF's new master's program in education and welcome him to the university community," said Kalikow. "He brings a commitment to teaching excellence that will enrich the master's program and enhance the way that teachers approach educational issues."

With more than 25 years of teaching experience, Griswold comes to UMF from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania where he served as an associate professor of professional and secondary education.

"I am honored to be a part of this landmark graduate study program at UMF," said Griswold. "UMF has a long history of dedication to the teachers of Maine, and this program will continue that commitment by giving them a great opportunity for a quality graduate education."

Included among Griswold's credentials are a focus on research and analysis and teaching and administrative experience. His history of academic experience includes positions at state and private institutions in Ohio, Oregon, Montana and New Jersey, with students from high school to doctoral studies programs. Griswold has also held many positions of leadership.

Griswold received a D.Ed. and M.Ed. in educational psychology at Rutgers University, N.J.; his MS at University of Vermont; and his BS at Cornell University, New York.

Developed by a partnership of UMF faculty and local educational experts, the UMF master's program is available for elementary, middle and secondary, early childhood and special education teachers who are interested in becoming leaders in their profession.

The 36-credit graduate program, developed for teachers with two years of experience, is structured to be completed over the course of three academic years, including summers.
