RUMFORD - Town Manager Len Greaney set a selectmen's workshop with casino proponent Seth Carey for next week to discuss details on the project.
That meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Municipal Building.
Greaney said Friday afternoon that he wants to schedule two other meetings to discuss the proposal. One will be with a group or individuals who oppose the casino for Oxford County or the Rumford area. That will likely be held in early September.
A third meeting would serve as a forum for residents of the area and will likely be held at Mountain Valley High School later in September.
At that forum, Greaney said he would have both proponents and opponents of the tentative plan so residents would have a clear understanding of the project. He also wants the forum televised on the local public access channel so as many people as possible could receive the information.
A statewide referendum on a resort casino for Oxford County, as proposed by Evergreen Mountain Enterprises owned by Seth Carey of Rumford, will be held Nov. 4.
Greaney said he plans to ask Pat LaMarche, former spokeswoman for the casino, to serve as proponent during the forum. She quit the post this week due to professional issues surrounding Carey, she said, but still thinks a casino would be a good thing for Maine tourism and economic recovery.
Selectmen on Thursday night narrowly gave their support to the project by a 3-2 vote, with Selectmen Arthur Boivin, Frank DiConzo and Mark Belanger voting in the affirmative.
Selectmen Rob Cameron and Brad Adley voted no. Cameron said he supported the concept but needed the answers to many questions before he could support the idea. Bradley agreed.
Among those questions needing answers are the location of a casino and where funding would come from.
Carey, a local lawyer, has been working to bring a resort casino to Rumford or some other location in Oxford County for more than two years. He and his staff gathered 100,000 signatures that forces the question on statewide referendum in November. |

I'll donate $20($4 per head)to put them ALL on a slow boat to China. Even Pat LaMarche knows dog sh!t when she steps in it..........

This is a paper project, a dream project, now as it was in the beginning. Nothing has changed. The failure to get backers in two years is the serious flaw for voters. The lack of answers to questions also is a roadblock. Last, the public meetings should have been held by the casino supporters, not the town of Rumford, but that is one of the problems with the town's politics. At least Selectmen Cameron and Adley were thinking when they sought more information before they cast their vote to support the casino project.

Posted By:John at August 23, 2008 11:43 AM (Suggest Removal) Since when is it the Rumford Town Managers responsibility to organize, setup and facilitate this referendums meetings? Is this being done on taxpayer dollars? Lastly, looks like Seth Carey has roped in a new "shield" to help protect him from his unethical dealings. Will answers actually be given by Seth at these meetings, or are we going to have to endure more of the same...."economic development, environmentally friendly" BS? I would not believe one single word that comes out of Seths mouth, so he USES an honorable person like Len Greaney to try and salvage this complete mess. Careful Len, you put your name next to Seth's and like eveything else it will very soon be in the mud.

I believe that a casino is right for Oxford county but right now lets put all of our ducks in a row before we condemn someone like Len. Facts about the possiblilty of a cassino will come. Then it will take oodles of money to bring it to fruition...I suspect a helluva lot more money than Carey can even begin to generate.

Posted By:John at August 23, 2008 2:27 PM (Suggest Removal) I said Len Greaney is an honorable man, but ask Len yourself how many private communications he has had with Seth Carey regarding this casino? Why is Len setting up these meetings? I can think of only two reasons 1: Seth is too incompentant to do so himself or 2: Seth knows that his word and crediability is dog poop and if he asks no one would show, so like he did with Pat Lamarche, he uses a much more moral and trustworthy person to do his work. This goes back to the "shield" comment made by Pat Lamarche. No one is condeming Len, all I'm saying is that if Len wants to put himself next to Seth then he better be prepared to spin half-truths and maintain strict codes of secracy which will most certainly ruin his own good name.

Posted By:Miss at August 24, 2008 10:24 AM (Suggest Removal) Good call, Read it Right - there is currently no proposed site for Seth's "Casino" project other than "oxford county." - That could range anywhere between Magalloway Plantation and South Paris. Where is the documentable proof that Rumford will share in ANY benefits produced by this pipe dream of the "constitutionally ineffective?" The responsibility for disseminating relevant information about this project rests with Seth Carey and Evergreen Enterprises - NOT with the town of Rumford. I cannot wait to watch the romp CasinosNo is going to have with this fiasco. Go Get'em Dennis!!

Either he's investing a lot or there are a lot of people investing that don't want their name showing up on the PAC reports which are public records. If he sells the rights to a casino that could be worth millions, only Mr. Carey can say for sure who has been promised a piece of the pie.
