Notaries wedding workshop

LEWISTON - Informed Notaries of Maine Inc., a private organization founded more than 15 years ago to educate notaries in the state, will host an educational workshop on how to perform civil wedding ceremonies.

The workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Lewiston Public Library's Jean Couture Room, 200 Lisbon St.

INM's Vice President Kathy Arsenault and Lewiston City Clerk Kathy Montejo will present the program. Information on the workshop and others can be found on the INM Web site at www.informednotariesofmaine.org.

To register, call 846-8959 or e-mail INM at memberservices@informednotaries of maine.org. The registration fee is $20 for members, $25 for nonmembers and $30 at the door. Make checks payable to INM and mail payment to INM, PO Box 16006, Lewiston, ME 04243.

It would be far better if notaries did not perform weddings, with the rare exception of when they have personal knowledge of the people they are providing this "service" for. In most cases they don't, which just adds to the marriages being performed for people who are in no way ready to be married..especially not to each other.
