Rumford officials back away from casino proposal

,
Friday, September 5, 2008

RUMFORD - After voting 3-2 last month to support local lawyer Seth Carey's proposed casino for Oxford County, selectmen at Thursday's board meeting quickly distanced themselves from it.

"I really don't think that selectmen or the town manager should be involved," Selectman Brad Adley said.

It was Adley and Selectman Robert Cameron who opposed board support at the Aug. 21 meeting, but Adley changed his mind last week after a 60-minute closed-door session among Rumford Town Manager Len Greaney, three Rumford selectmen and Carey. That session took place during a Board of Selectmen meeting.

"This is a private business running a referendum. ...This is way too much of a hot potato. We should cut and run. We don't need to be here," Adley said.

Selectman Frank DiConzo agreed, telling the board that it needs to back off, wash its hands of the plan and let people statewide vote in November on whether to allow a casino in Oxford County.

Cameron was absent Thursday night.

Prior to this decision, Len Greaney explained what led to the sudden reversal, claiming the Sun Journal had accused Greaney and selectmen of convening an illegal meeting last week when Greaney and three selectmen met behind closed doors with Carey.

"The newspapers continue to shoot us down," Greaney said. "I've had some long conversations with the editorial staff of the Sun Journal. They were very unhappy about that meeting we had last week because it looked like we may have broken a couple of procedural rules and they may in fact be correct."

Greaney said the decision to enter executive session may have been a mistake in judgment, but not the content of that meeting in which Carey wanted to share confidential information.

He said he'd invited Sun Journal editors to hold a Freedom of Information workshop with Rumford officials.

Greaney then sought to correct statements attributed to him in an Aug. 29 story about the Aug. 28 closed-door session meeting.

"Regarding the comments in the paper, some are accurate and some are misstated, well, if anyone wants to know the truth, come to me to learn both sides of the story," he said.

Greaney said he was misquoted when a Sun Journal reporter wrote that he said, "If the casino wins (in referendum), Rumford would be in a sales mode."

"I said, 'If the referendum passes, and' - and that 'and' is important and was left out - 'and the citizens would like a casino, then we would move into sales mode,'" Greaney said.

After the meeting adjourned, Greaney said he probably should learn more about Maine's law regarding executive sessions.

Again, and again, and again, the Sun-Journal easily finds the holes in Rumford's political socks - because there are holes. Mr. Greaney is uneducated and inexperienced as a town manager. I would have to ask what else he is doing in his ignorance that we do not know about yet. This board needs an educated and experienced town manager. This is the board that was going to change Rumford politics. Not so, not so. It's an embarrassment!

I, for one, am very pleased and impressed with Mr. Greaney's performance as town manager. He listens. He is thoughtful. He is respectful. He is intelligent. He is getting things accomplished. He is willing to learn from others and to defer to their knowledge. I don't think it matters one bit if he has training in town management. He has the competence to successfully run this town. And that's what we need.

"The newspapers continue to shoot us down," Greaney said." No Mr. Greaney, the newspaper continues to keep you accountable. That’s too bad if you don’t like. As a citizen of this town, I’m glad it does.

Mr.Greaney should not be the town manager. I thought he was only going to be there for a short time. A year is not a short time just to fill in until we get a new town manager. He should not be there.

Mr. Greaney, Go to MVHS and ask the biology deptartment if the have any room in the lab to grow a few spines? If so please grow a few and pass them out at your next closed door session. We are known for standing up and taking chances, the Sun Journal continues to bash us no matter what we do. wouldn't it be nice if actually stood up for ourselves and one of our own and WON. The Sun Journal staff is always looking to cut other towns because they hate the fact that they live in Lewburg, they should turn their negative spew on themselves what a DUMP lewiston is, drive down any Tree street in Lewspew, and you will see.. These poor writers/staff have to live with this daily, its no wonder they have chosen a town like Rumford to dump on, especially hen the town manager folds his 4 aces. Way to lay right down Len, you make this so easy for them, great job!

Mr. Greaney obviously doesn’t have the experience to be Town Manager and our selectmen are selling the town short by postponing a search. Mr. Greaney does have one advantage over the two previous Town Managers. Because he is in with the TRR crowd, they aren’t constantly haranguing him. Can you imagine the screaming they would have done if a former Town Manager had convened this illegal meeting? It’s OK with them if he does it though. In the words of Chuck on the River Valley Free Press web site, “Be controlled by the proprietors of the website or suffer personal attacks. Conversely, should town leaders join with the Reporter; they shall receive eternal forgiveness and understanding, regardless of their behavior. There seems to be no middle ground.

Lets just hope that this is taken care of properly. It seems that it is okay when Greaney and the selectmen accuse the fire department of breaking some by law procedures but when our town leaders break procedural rules and conduct illegal meetings it seems to be alright and its the sunjournals fault for esposing such illegal meetings. Take responsibility for your action as you aspect to have others be responsible and held accountable for their actions. Why not take this for the team Len?

This whole backdoor town manager is business as usual. Be associated with TRR is concerning. Did you see their second grade attempt at humor (which lacked intelligence/humor) against RPD? What kind of damage does this editor have. She must have always been in the out crowd and now is trying to fit in. I feel so sad for her. She things and proudly writes about herself and how wonderful she is and how like Palin she is etc...read last note about her mom calling her. She is a lost soul. Education does not always make you intelligent. This whole think is sad. Rumford we are better than this. We are prouder than this. Lets stop basing all our town agencies. Let's support our fire, police, public works etc. Let's take back this town from the few who seek to make a game of it. Lets run legal meetings and listen to each other.

Funny comments Hugh Chisholm Fan. As a Lewistonian, whenever I have free time I go straight to Rumford. It's beautiful. Lots to do. Modern. And it smells nice.

Look at the mess Mr. Greaney stepped into, look at what the people of Rumford voted for, look at the last town manager the people and selectmen ran out of Rumford, you people will never be happy because you are happies with you have something to complain about. Any of you run for selectmen or apply for the town managers job? Do something be proactive. I know if I still lived there I would be, I would educate myself on the issues and work with the town leaders.

seems to me that the town manager is doing a dam good job there for a change after a the bs thats been going boils down to the fact the people need to shut the hell up and let this guy do the job he was hired to do. oh wait he might get things done cant have that now can we. i moved away from rumford because of all the bulls--- last year i got sick and tired seeing Rumford in the newspaper and people complaining about things that they cant or wont help fix every time we get someone in office that can help straighten that mess up somebody got something bad to say now i dont have to listen to it. Sorry rumford but i just couldnt live there any more there is nothing to keep people in there 30's around town

Lewburgian, I fell victim to my own anger and mis-spoke. I retract my negative comments about Lewiston. To Lewiston's credit it has put forth huge efforts in revitalizing it's downtown and I actually do visit Lewiston from time to time and have a beer at Gritty's or enjoy a great meal at Fuel. I do however have serious issues with the Sun Journal and it's mission to print something negative almost daily about Rumford. My apologies as I would imagine you are as proud of your town as I am of mine.

Rumford, reading this apology and the above post by Hugh Chisholm Fan makes me believe it is the TRR editor. Mr. Greaney evidently didn't do "their" bidding in this case. I wonder if "their" support of Mr. Greaney will now wane.

Anyone that has been around that has taken part in town government in Rumford knows that 3 selectmen in a group is a quorum. This has been debated for a long time and Len knew this going in. He should not play dumb know. Oh that is right, it is OK because he is part of the TRR... He writes for them and is on their quite frequently. We need to advertise for a real town manager and get the job done correctly. We missed the boat with Madigan and must bite the bullet of an incompetent leader. The majority of the selectmen miss lead us about how long he would be doing the job. We were told it would be temporary, this is not. Once again MB,FD, and AB get their agenda across along with the TRR... Let's force the select board to look for a new manager...

I think Rumford would do a whole lot better if they ditched these pathetic selectmen and voted in some new ones! I'm not familiar with Mr.Greaney, but I agree with Lisa..look at what he's come into! I refuse to go to anymore town meetings, I'm sick of the childish hot headed selectmen who are doing NOTHING for this town but making it look worse and worse.

Blue Eyes, Len Greaney has been highly involved in town government and is well aware of what he was stepping into. He simply may have been naive in thinking he could play both sides of the fence and still maintain his reputation. What will he do now? The answer to this question is what will determine what kind of leader he is.

Is there a link between the Silly Three Selectman who vote as a bloc, the Interim (?) Town Manager hired without a formal application process, TRR, and the casino folks? Do any of these people have a financial interest in the proposed casino? Hmmmmm... enquiring minds want to know. Hopefully the Sun-Journal will keep the pressure on and conduct more investigative reporting about the smell emanating in Rumford. (this time it's NOT the mill!)

Hugh Chisholm Fan said "We are known for standing up and taking chances, the Sun Journal continues to bash us no matter what we do. wouldn't it be nice if actually stood up for ourselves and one of our own and WON." What they are really saying is that they are trying to run the town for their own benefit and the benefit of their friends. Maybe someone should tell them that this town belongs to the community, not the select few. I respect Mr. Greaney for admitting a mistake. That crowd will publicly bash him because he didn't follow their script. You sure you still want to run with that crowd Len?

CASINO NO!!! My parents live in Bangor and watch the 'success' of the casino there at the beginning of every month in the fashion of people on state gambling with our tax money. Keep the damn casino away from the western foothills thank you very much. I firmly believe that with oil (and other high costs) prices the way the are now, the voters will see that what little money people may be left with after heating their homes doesn't need to be thrown away gambling.

Another million LOL's. Now is the time to get away from selectmen and create a town council form of government. Only perhaps then will people be able to sleep at night. As far as a casino, if indeed one is to be built, it needs to be placed on Rt. 26 somewhere between Gray and Bethel. That's where the money is. Not in some little obscure town with the major artery from the south being Rt. 108..........

If they can do it in Bangor, why not Rumford? I agree it doesn't much matter if you are for or against a casino. Yet it is the responsible thing to ask the towns people and all others if it is something deemed viable and worth pursuing. Until then, any ridicule or disagreement is as much prejudice as it is counter productive whether it is accepted or not. Intefering with a town in the name of anothers cause, is not much in the way of due process and that seems to be all they are asking for.

Alot of back-pedaling going on in Rumford. "The newspapers continue to shoot us down"? How about "The newspapers continue to report what is going on."? A meeting was held. The newspapers reported that a meeting was held. How is that "shootin them down"? And about The Rumford Distorter, she walked through a field and saw a few frogs in a puddle. So because SHE saw a few frogs, the people who have been studying them for years on a much wider spectrum are WRONG? Someone needs to stop living in their own microcosm called delusion and take a look at reality. I'm not saying the world is going to end based on the frog count, but one puddle? Give me a break. And her comment about the children in Iraq. They love the U S soldiers because the U S gives them hope for a bright future? The kids like the U S soldiers because the U S soldiers toss them food and candy. They are KIDS. And that ridiculous "Crime Wave" "article". How can anyone be proud of that garbage. How about Rumford just get rid of the police department. Then, when someone needs the police, we can listen to them whine about how the police are never around when they are needed. Somebody needs to grow up!

The politics of Rumford have not changed because the people in the town do not change. Whoever the Town Manager is in Rumford, he or she will not be able to solve Rumford's problems. The Town Manager becomes a casualty of the Town. They drove one man out because he was too smart to live in Rumford. Every election in Rumford just brings in another cast of fools lacking both education and commons sense. I like to remember some of the funnier incidents this combination has precipitated over the years. Like the time, two selectmen illegally cut down a couple of beautiful trees on Congress Street with their own chainsaws. Now that's hands on. It's been this way since I can remember, and I am sixty.

Wow its incredible that you are so bitter about Med-Care and this story and Rumford who serves with the very same doctors who work in the CMMC emergency room are jumped on to wow....Its funny people tell me they drive to CMMC instead of Rumford cause better ER physicals which is so ignorant because they are the same exact physcians just rotate through the hospitals. There are very incredible people who work at Rumford Hospital and specially services continue to grow, oncology is growing so services can be had in Rumford. Helipad put in for service to bigger medical centers...so Oxford County were you bitterly fired or are you just really this stupid?

The Rumford Reporter continues it's crap. It posts slanted stories, and offers no chance for rebuttal. As much as it complains about the Sun-Journal, they are far worse. The Sun-Journal provides a chance to respond. They don't.

Oxford County ALS, what in the name of sanity does Rumford Hospital have to do with anything in this article. You are obviously lost in the fog. CASINO. That is what this article is about. Oxford County ALS, is United going to provide orthopods at Rumford Hospital? How is a United truck going to change the dervices at the hospital? What you are basically saying is that CMMC is incompetent, but United will change evverything. Don't get me wrong. United is a very good service, but United does not offer orthopedic services. You also fail to realize that no matter who sits at Rumford Hospital, the service they provide will be in the best interest of the patient, not what some disgruntled malcontent has to say. Now, with that being said, CASINO is the topic here. Once again, you are trying to push YOUR politcal agenda into forums where it does not belong, or is evven remotely relevant. GROW UP!
