Palin asked librarian about removing books

WASILLA, Alaska- Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.
According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn't fully support her and had to go.
Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked. After a wave of public support for her, Palin relented and let Emmons keep her job.
It all happened 12 years ago and the controversy long ago disappeared into musty files. Until this week. Under intense national scrutiny, the issue has returned to dog her. It has been mentioned in news stories in Time Magazine and The New York Times and is spreading like a virus through the blogosphere.
The stories are all suggestive, but facts are hard to come by. Did Palin actually ban books at the Wasilla Public Library?
In December 1996, Emmons told her hometown newspaper, the Frontiersman, that Palin three times asked her - starting before she was sworn in - about possibly removing objectionable books from the library if the need arose.
Emmons told the Frontiersman she flatly refused to consider any kind of censorship. Emmons, now Mary Ellen Baker, is on vacation from her current job in Fairbanks and did not return e-mail or telephone messages left for her Wednesday.
When the matter came up for the second time in October 1996, during a City Council meeting, Anne Kilkenny, a Wasilla housewife who often attends council meetings, was there.
Like many Alaskans, Kilkenny calls the governor by her first name.
"Sarah said to Mary Ellen, 'What would your response be if I asked you to remove some books from the collection?" Kilkenny said.
"I was shocked. Mary Ellen sat up straight and said something along the line of, 'The books in the Wasilla Library collection were selected on the basis of national selection criteria for libraries of this size, and I would absolutely resist all efforts to ban books."' Palin didn't mention specific books at that meeting, Kilkenny said.
Palin herself, questioned at the time, called her inquiries rhetorical and simply part of a policy discussion with a department head "about understanding and following administration agendas," according to the Frontiersman article.
Were any books censored banned? June Pinell-Stephens, chairwoman of the Alaska Library Association's Intellectual Freedom Committee since 1984, checked her files Wednesday and came up empty-handed.
Pinell-Stephens also had no record of any phone conversations with Emmons about the issue back then. Emmons was president of the Alaska Library Association at the time. Books may not have been pulled from library shelves, but there were other repercussions for Emmons.
Four days before the exchange at the City Council, Emmons got a letter from Palin asking for her resignation. Similar letters went to Police Chief Irl Stambaugh, public works director Jack Felton and finance director Duane Dvorak. John Cooper, a fifth director, resigned after Palin eliminated his job overseeing the city museum.
Palin told the Anchorage Daily News then that the letters were just a test of loyalty as she took on the mayor's job, which she'd won from three-term mayor John Stein in a hard-fought election. Stein had hired many of the department heads. Both Emmons and Stambaugh had publicly supported him against Palin.
Emmons survived the loyalty test and a second one a few months later. She resigned in August 1999, two months before Palin was voted in for a second mayoral term.
Palin might have become a household name in the last week, but Kilkenny, who is not a Palin fan, is on her own small path to Internet fame. She sent out an e-mail earlier this week to friends and family answering, from her perspective, the question non-Alaskans are asking any Alaskan they know: "Who is this Sarah Palin?"
Kilkenny's e-mail got bounced through cyberspace and ended up on news blogs. Now the small-town mom and housewife is scheduling interviews with national news media and got her name on the front page of The New York Times, even if it was misspelled.

Posted By:NightCrawler at September 6, 2008 7:40 AM (Suggest Removal) More partisan character assassination. How low will the "progressives" go? They are scraping the bottom of the barrel when they go back 12 years ago and make a hero out of an obscure librarian who doesn't like Palin and had a run-in with her. Is this story supposed to draw some sort of parallel with Obama attending the church of a racist reverend for the past 20 years, being good friends with a domestic terrorist and a convicted felon? Instead of women being PROUD to have a woman on a Presidential ticket, Palin is being crucified by the lamestream media and by the radical left wing internet blogs.

I'm certainly not old enough to be Palin's mother..but you apparently missed my whole point. I for one, am a registered Democrat...two...I care about my country. Three...I am sick and tired of all this political bickering. You took my whole point and like a good politician would..blew it into something much larger! So you need to get the hell off my back and put your hot air somewhere else. I'm entitled to my opinions on here as well as everyone else. Don't accuse me of hating my country.

Was any book in that library actually censored? The article said no. So, what's the big deal? Much ado about nothing, folks.

Posted By:linda at September 6, 2008 8:22 AM (Suggest Removal) I doubt Ms Kilkenny wanted fame and fortune....she is FROM Alaska..she has DIRECT dealings with Palin..it IS relevant what she is telling us....what she said is..BEFORE she was even sworn in, Palin was pretty well telling those who were against her, hang on cause your gonna lose your job sucker......I think that is very revelant to what her position, and her values, will be...I don't like you, so your out.....is her mantra..and it has been brought to our attention over and over...she uses her position in office to do as she pleases....with 'God's will' of course....Obama may have belonged to a church that had a radical preacher, but it was the preacher who went off on a tear, not Obama who used his church to get 'his own way'...and he quickly distanced himself from that church when the PREACHER went crazy...The rep.'s are tootiong "country First"...if the TRULY felt that way...they would bow down...and bow out..how can Palin let her children be dragged through the limelight? OH wait..I hear it coming....the crys of ITS YOU DEMS THA KEEP IT GOING.....well, our cry is 'why, with all the termoil going on in her family (a newborn downs child, and pregnant teen, a son heading off to war) would she leave home, and throw her family into the spotlight? She should have gracefully said, as a God loving, christian, prolife mom, my FAMILY comes first..thanks for the honor, but my FAMILY comes first'.......I truly feel sorry for McSame...he has a real 'winner' in his ONE HOT BABE......peace...

Posted By:Drew at September 6, 2008 8:35 AM (Suggest Removal) So we finally find out what Liberals like Alan and the rest feel about strong women. Poor Alan has crapped himself, this is one woman he can't beatup. Alan my friend, YOU are the DEFINITION of style over substance! Remember Liberalism is built on lies therefore Liberals lie. Liberalism is not just a lie, it's an empty lie where outcomes don't matter only intentions count. Liberals like Alan are all for censoring Rush, Bortz, Laura and the like and banning books that they disagree with on a national/federal level. What books are in a public library is up to the local community not the Librarian.

Posted By:linda at September 6, 2008 8:36 AM (Suggest Removal) Blue Eyes....Alan has some very good posts today...as for namecalling...holy crap, thats all people do on here...NC does it daily to those who disagree..as does Drew, momoftwo and many others....but when it hits you directly its a different story huh??? I have larned to pretty much ignore those people as they have more issues than anyone could ever help with in a blog...people who trash others for the simple reason of disagreeing with a statement...does not warrent my time or effort to rspond...except when they say something about me that is a direct lie...as Drew did when he said Alan and I hated our country....neither of us had anything in any post that suggested such a thing...
and as for banning books from a PUBLIC library...that IS a big issue..the reason the word PUBLIC is first, is because it si a place where everyone can go to borrow books that THEY PERSONALLY are interested in....I don't care wht you, or anyone else reads....so don't tell me if I want a book on astrology and the meaning of life, I can't borrow it from my PUBLIC library!! She was feeling the town out, using her OWN personal believes to attempt to recreate the PUBLIC library to suit her OWN PERSONAL believes......That is a revelant thing to know about her...its her values and believes that she will bring into the VP position....peace..

I simply brought up the point because, she may have felt she was doing what her community wanted her to do. I'm not saying this is the case, just a possibility. Either way, none of us really know what her justifications (if any) were. As for linda, please remember that your Great Obama has already gone of record saying the FAMILY IS OFF-LIMITS! Gov. Palin's decision to run was hers to make, not yours - or anyone else's.

Kudos to you both. In my initial comment, I never said I was for or against McCain/Palin. I'm just sick of all this name calling, back stabbing, etc that goes along with politics. I'm not crazy about Obama either. Here is a man that can't salute the American flag along with his running mates? This, to me....says an awful lot about him. A true American would salute the flag.

Everyone has skeletons in their closets...things in them we don't want to see in a person that will run our country. My biggest concern now is will one of these presidential candidates help our falling country or make it worse. I honestly feel there is no sense to be a registered Dem/ Rep or anything. I will vote for whom I feel would do the best for our counrty...regardless of their party. You have an excellent point with Condoleeza.

This campaign is going to be nasty and Sarah Palin is going to kick some more butts like she already proved she could do in Alaska.
And, Ben Harrison back me up, you Mainers are jealous of Alaska. You think that you have a big, cold, special state that the world revolves around.
I knew it will be a Republican landslide this year when space-cadet Howard Dean told the few in Lewiston that greeted him that "Maine will be the difference". LOLLOASFOTF

Patriotism to you as attacking what is good about this country. Being Liberals you fight for policies that lock people into government assisted poverty/slavery so you can get their vote. You're against lower energy costs. You hate business. (the lifeblood of our country). Freedom scares the hell out of Liberals.; examples, school choice, the second ammendment (guns), freedom of employment. You're for income redistribution, limiting the salaries of employees, for destroying the private healthcare system. Need more?

She wanted to censor books...The way I look at it, if a kid gets a hold of it, at least they are reading, there is so much more that can be discovered on the internet. I watches "Sarah" speech and she reminds me of that nasty spoiled mean girl in high school who thought it was her way or the high way until someone put her in her place. I am a democrat, was considering voting for McCain, but not now because of her, she is hot headed, looking for a pat on the back for her great lines and continues to use public office as her soap box and her way of keeping her "popularity" I just do not like her and her actions...threatning a libraian is exactly what I would expect of her, who else along the way has she done this too?? Maybe she should have read the books she wanted to censor and her daughter wouldnt be pregnant

It was sold to a businessman from Valdez named Larry Reynolds, who paid $2.1 million for the plane -- shy of the $2.7 million purchase price ($600,000 loss) -- according to news reports at the time. Reynolds contributed to Palin's campaign in 2006. That sounds about right - republican ethics at work. Sell a government asset at a significant loss to a campaign contributor.

Dirty attacks have long been a democratic game. Long before Mr. Rove, there was a mental patient running loose, doing the Clinton's dirty work. James Carville loved , and still loves, bad-mouthing anybody who does not agree with the narrow, liberal viewpoint. Marxist, Leninist, socialist- whatever label you want to apply.

Isn't that what McCain is doing? The Vietnam war ended what? 35 years ago? I get it he's a hero, he was a prisoner, and he has my respect for that. But why does he feel the need to mention it everyday? Also on someone else's post someone mentioned about Obama not saluting the flag. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's saluting the American flag reserved for men & women who have served in the military? Imagine what they'd say about him saluting it if he wasn't in the military. Last, who ever wins the election Dem or Rep, you all forget who will really run the country. The Corporate Party, powered by greed, there will be no changes that effect them, no matter who wins. Posted By:Lil at September 6, 2008 1:02 PM (Suggest Removal) Key Alaska allies of John McCain are trying to derail a politically charged investigation into Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of her public safety commissioner in order to prevent a so-called "October surprise" that would produce embarrassing information about the vice presidential candidate on the eve of the election.
In a move endorsed by the McCain campaign Friday, John Coghill, the GOP chairman of the state House Rules Committee, wrote a letter seeking a meeting of Alaska's bipartisan Legislative Council in order to remove the Democratic state senator in charge of the so-called "troopergate" investigation. Why does Sarah Palin hate the truth?

Posted By:Lil at September 6, 2008 1:07 PM (Suggest Removal) Thing is, all this stonewalling is probably too late -- damaging information, including a phone call between Palin staffer Frank Bailey and a state police official that ABC News acquired, has already come out, and more is yet to come, despite the McCain campaign's ham-handed Nixonian efforts to kill the investigation. What is Sarah Palin hiding?

Posted By:JulieL at September 6, 2008 1:07 PM (Suggest Removal) Lil the pin comment made me laugh!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA. The people now heading the investigation in Alaska are actually trying to move the investigation up to the b eginning of October rather than the end of October.....let's see how this plays out in Alaska. I kn ow the GOP has sent its minions en mass...I really hope the story about her having an affair with her husbands former partner isn't true but the guy just asked that his divorce records be sealed...that Damn National Enquirer always stirring things up. Remember back when they only talked about the 7 headed monsters living in Wildwood, New Jersey? Now they have become real investigative journalists a la John Edwards. And Sarah Palin...I guess she and Johnny boy really do have a lot in common...allegedly.

People need to be educated and book banning and exploiting your children on national television is not good leadership. (in my eyes, but we're all allowed to have our own opinions here) I'm not a fan of the dems or republicans, but I know I want my daughter to grow up with choices. That means no republican votes for (president) fo me...this time around anyway.

Posted By:Lil at September 6, 2008 1:12 PM (Suggest Removal) The biggest project that Sarah Palin undertook as mayor of this small town was an indoor sports complex, where locals played hockey, soccer, and basketball, especially during the long, dark Alaskan winters.
The only catch was that the city began building roads and installing utilities for the project before it had unchallenged title to the land. The misstep led to years of litigation and at least $1.3 million in extra costs for a small municipality with a small budget. What was to be Ms. Palin's legacy has turned into a financial mess that continues to plague Wasilla. Why does Sarah Palin hate fiscal responsibility?

Posted By:Lil at September 6, 2008 1:13 PM (Suggest Removal) Palin told the Alaska Business Monthly, “I’ve been so focused on state government, I haven’t really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place.” [Alaska Business Monthly, 3/1/07] Why does Sarah Palin hate America and the troops, and want to appease our enemies by looking for an exit plan?

Posted By:kate at September 6, 2008 1:14 PM (Suggest Removal) Drew, etal, you seem to think that feminist women hate Palin beacuse she is STRONG? Hardly. In fact Republican women cannot possibly be strong, as they have been manipulated into beleiving that the Republican Party has something to offer them and their families...they do NOT! The Republican Party was anti-ERA; is against safe birth-control options for young women (which would cut down on unnecessary abortions); against any changes to the "Family Leave" policy (which will not penalize them if they have to take leave to care for a sick loved one); and many other women's issues too long to list here. A woman who knows all of this, yet chooses to call herself a Republican is a traitor to our gender and to herself, and I personally find them to be morallly repulsive and sickening to look at.

Posted By:JulieL at September 6, 2008 1:14 PM (Suggest Removal) And would this sports complex benefit her hockey playing son? She wouldn't use her position to benefit her own family would she? HAHAHAHAHA vetting; refers to performing a background check on someone before offering them employment. In addition, in intelligence gathering, assets are vetted to determine their usefulness.

Posted By:Drew at September 6, 2008 1:19 PM (Suggest Removal) Jen you will have all your choices made for you under the Junior/Marxist regime. Where and when you can get medical care, what you can drive, but don't worry your daughter will still be able to kill all the babies that she wants. Liberals give you no choices. Conservatives don't much care what choices you make just don't expect the government to pay for, endorse or make laws for the rest of us to make those same choices. You want to kill your babies? I'll not approve but it's the law of the land just don't look for someone else to pay for it. You liberals want to support your favorite charity, go right ahead and reach into our own pocket and do so, and I'll do the same with the charities I want to support.

Posted By:Jay at September 6, 2008 1:23 PM (Suggest Removal) Alaska budget is running at a surplus. Gov Palin has an 80+ approval rating. When gas prices went up, taxes for this filled the state coffers, she gave the money back. She gave a great speech. The progressives went on the attack about her family, all that was disspelled, now they are picking apart every little detail of her life. Noone has had this type of scrutiny, noone. So she has scared somebody. Obama has not had this type of scrutiny. McCain has not had this type of attack.
What next, I can see an interview making the front page, "Sarah Palin s dog once crapped on my lawn In Wasilla." I would think all the women evrywhere would be VERY upset, about how Sarah is being treated.
I also think Senator Obama is one of the brightest stars to come along in a while. He has been put forward WAAY too early in his career and is being sacrificed by unscrupulous people. I don't think the differences between the parties is all that far apart, I would however like to hear them argue these differences without this constant dredging up of personal past history. This is front page news? I enjoyed all their speeches. Rhetoric and bombast aside.
I would love for all of them to go on a talk show together, and say, stop the crap!!!
