BETHEL - Police are searching for a young woman who robbed a KeyBank assistant manager at gunpoint Thursday morning by forcing her to withdraw money from an ATM inside the bank.
The robber is in her 20s, and is about 5 feet, 4 inches tall, police said.
She wore a white T-shirt, tan Capri pants and white Crocs, and she hid her face with a multicolored scarf and a maroon cap pulled low on her head, police Chief Alan J. Carr said.
She was carrying a white canvas backpack and she fled on foot up High Street toward Gould Academy, Carr said. He did disclose how much money she got.
The police chief was first to arrive after the bank's assistant manager, Marjorie Osgood, called 911 for help at 8:30 a.m. He said he didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. The robbery suspect armed with a small handgun was nowhere in sight.
"Once I realized there was a weapon involved and that we didn't know where the woman was leaving to, I advised the schools to enter lockdowns," Carr said.
Some businesses in the area, including the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, also locked its doors.
State police sent a team of eight detectives, including the Evidence Response Team and its crime lab van and troopers to assist Bethel police and the Oxford County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.
Until the woman is caught, State police Lt. Walter Grzyb advises people to be cautious and to contact police if they see anything or anyone out of the ordinary.
Carr urged people to go on with their daily lives.
"People should have no reason to be afraid," he said. The incident began at 8:20 a.m. when Osgood arrived for work, Carr said. Before she could enter the bank to open it for business, the young woman approached Osgood and asked for money.
She followed Osgood into the bank's foyer to the ATM vestibule.
"She said she needed money. The girl was nervous and then displayed a small handgun until the money was given to her," Carr said. "The manager used her own ATM card to get the money."
No shots were fired, and Osgood was not injured.
"Marjorie did an excellent job," Carr said. "She kept the perpetrator from getting into the bank. She talked to her for about five minutes, then afterward, she was pretty shook up with the initial onslaught, but as time went on she calmed down."
Police are urging anyone who walked or drove past the bank before 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning to call state police at 824-3437 and provide information to investigators. Bethel police are also conducting interviews.
After the robbery, people approaching the bank were turned away and told the bank was closed for the day. The ATM area opened after Osgood and other employees had left.
Carr said Thursday's incident was Bethel's first bank robbery that he could recall, but town historian Stanley Howe said it was the second in 110 years.
"In Sept. 1898, there was an attempt to blow the safe off the Bethel Savings Bank, which is now Northeast Bank," Howe said. "It was a dark and rainy night when they did it, but the bank had a new safe with a new inner section which stayed locked through two explosions. They were unsuccessful." Maine State Police are urging anyone who walked or drove past Key Bank in Bethel before 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning to call them at 824-3437. |

Posted By:Blue Eyes at September 19, 2008 8:45 AM (Suggest Removal) I'm with Roger and Tracy. Too many people are having to struggle to get by. Having to decide whether to buy oil or food or medications. So much money is being sent to other countries to help them, but our own country won't help its own people!

Posted By:PR at September 19, 2008 12:12 PM (Suggest Removal) Things are very tough these days. My husband and I have full-time jobs but I'm looking for a second job to help make ends meet. I think it's safe to say, though, that committing a felony is NOT the way to increase one's income.

Times are tough for everyone right now.

Posted By:Gene at September 19, 2008 12:32 PM (Suggest Removal) Times are tough and we're all struggling, wondering how we're possibly going to heat our homes this Winter, these cold mornings serve as a reminder of what's to come. But even still would anyone one of us get a gun and rob another person?? I believe to go to those extremes was to fuel a drug habit. Attack me if you'd like, it's just my belief and my beliefs are no better or worse then yours.

Posted By:S at September 19, 2008 1:01 PM (Suggest Removal) Obviously..what she did was wrong. But, Desperate Times call for Desperate measures.. maybe she's out of work and just trying to feed her family...and saw no other way. Believe it or not.. a single mom cannot always get help from the state, not if she's got an unemployed boyfriend sitting on the couch playing PS2 all day! I should know.. my sister could not get any help from the state when she was out of work, because her lazy boyfriend wasn't actively looking for work and living under the same roof, and she had a 7 y/o son to support. He went to bed many nights with an empty belly... The state told her they would give her food stamps, etc if she kicked her bf out- but she could not bring herself to do that, as he probably would have beaten her up...

Posted By:SURE at September 19, 2008 7:19 PM (Suggest Removal) the state should have taken that kid going to bed hungry, who knows what this woman wanted the money for, maybe she needed a fix shoppin, we'll find out when they catch her, don't they have dogs there or didn't they, i know they did when a robber was at large in auburn once, they found him too.

Posted By:Blue Eyes at September 19, 2008 7:26 PM (Suggest Removal) First..Tammy, your comment does reek of ignorance...geesh. But I also can't imagine that woman allowing her son to go to bed hungry. There are plenty of hotlines and places she could have gone if she was so afraid this boyfriend would beat her up. Her son should come first.

Posted By:Citizen at September 20, 2008 12:53 PM (Suggest Removal) Desperate times call from desperate messures??? This person was attempting to steal from the bank. That means the person was trying to take money from the people who place their savings in that bank. She was trying to take MY money possible. DO NOT make excuses for this person. They do not care about you or what you have done to save your money. They are in it for themselves. As for the question on where were the dogs. The town of Bethel does not have a dog. The selectman would never allow a dog on the police department. The insurances are to much and the liability is to great. Bethel can't even have two officers on. The officers end up covering the town alone most of the time. We need better town coverage. We need more officers.
