BETHEL - Police on Friday arrested a Main Street woman and charged her with robbing a KeyBank employee at gunpoint on Thursday.
Nancy Plante, 30, was charged with robbery after Maine State Police troopers and detectives questioned her at the Bethel police station Friday night.
Plante lives in an apartment at 52 Main St. The bank she is accused of robbing is at 96 Main St.
Plante is accused of brandishing a gun to threaten KeyBank Assistant Manager Marjorie Osgood who arrived to open the business about 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
The robber, hiding her face with a scarf and a cap, followed Osgood into the bank foyer and demanded money. Osgood took money out of her own account with an ATM card and gave it to the woman, police said.
The victim described the woman who robbed her as nervous and desperate for money. No shots were fired.
When it was over, the suspect fled on foot toward High Street and for the remainder of the day, remained at large. The robber kept the town on edge as a school and some businesses locked up while police arrived to investigate.
State police sent a team of eight detectives, including the Evidence Response Team and its crime lab van and troopers to assist Bethel police and the Oxford County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.
State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland did not have specific information about what led police to Plante as a suspect. Footage from a bank surveillance camera provided images of the woman who robbed the bank employee.
Police did not say whether any of the stolen money or the gun used in the heist had been recovered during the investigation.
Plante was taken to the Oxford County Jail on Friday night where she was expected to be held at least until she makes a court appearance next week. |

Posted By:Skip at September 20, 2008 8:15 AM (Suggest Removal) Oh she won't get a slap on the wrist,Julie.Even in liberal Maine a felony involving a firearm is a pretty serious offence. She'll do some time if she did the crime and not found mentally incompetent.

Posted By:Blue Eyes at September 20, 2008 9:40 AM (Suggest Removal) Wow..everyone is so judgemental this morning! Granted, robbing a bank is not a good thing, regardless of anyones personal situation. And because she garnished a weapon..she'll do time. But geesh, everyone is saying she needed drugs, or she should have been working or blah blah. I'm not defending her robbing a bank by far...but can't any of you wait to hear the true reason she did it? Like Skip said, if she's not working, Bethel is a small town for one, and you can't just go anywhere and demand they hire you.

Posted By:Anono at September 20, 2008 10:43 AM (Suggest Removal) No, this woman is a drug addict. Us people from Newry and Bethel know her well. She uses rehab as a tool to get out of convictions for the crimes she commits but rehab never works for her. Don't think she will get out of this one

Posted By:Blue Eyes at September 20, 2008 10:52 AM (Suggest Removal) Then if this woman is a well known drug addict...she'll have lots of time to rehabilitate and think behind bars! Thank you, ANON..for bringing this to light. My point before is that all others DON'T know her and just assume anything that comes to mind. At least now she won't have to worry about how to pay for her next fix. And if we had a better judicial system...they wouldn't keep allowing her to use rehab as her tool to get out of paying for her crime.

Posted By:Rumford Native at September 20, 2008 12:28 PM (Suggest Removal) OK, if this woman needed money for oil, food, etc., there are numerous agencies that would assist her. After all, this is Maine, the land of the freebies. Speaking as an employee of a bank, I hope that this woman goes to jail for the offense she has committed. Thank goodness Ms. Osgood was not physically harmed. Let's hope that she is able to continue her job at Key without fear of another robbery. In our annual robbery training, given by local police departments, we are told that 90-95% of bank robberies in Maine are done by people looking for quick money to buy drugs. Guess this perp is another pathetic statistic.

Posted By:Aaron at September 20, 2008 2:20 PM (Suggest Removal) Lots of excuses from all the liberals. The woman pulled a gun to get money. I do not care if she was desperate, mentally ill, hungry, waiting for a check from her new job, just filled her oil tank, trying to find a job in the small town, or had a yeast infection she should go to JAIL. People in Maine will use every excuse to not have anyone take responsibility for themselves. If the punishments were more stern and the rehab excuse could not be used than maybe this would happen less.
The one thing I must say about this woman is that maybe she is too dumb to have a job. To rob a bank in a small town on the street you live on is not to swift.

Posted By:Blue Eyes at September 20, 2008 2:32 PM (Suggest Removal) Aaron, not all of us Mainers use every excuse to have someone not take responsibility for their actions. I'm a lifetime Mainer..and trust me...I'm sick and tired of seeing people getting away with things. Here's an example..my better halfs step son recently went to court with 5 charges..one for using false ID,one for stealing a check and then forging it,one for altering a prescription and the other for using someone's credit card number to dial porn lines. Guess what, his lawyer got three charges dropped, he spent 24 hours in jail and has to pay a small fine. Then I hear these are all misdimeanors? He should have gone to jail for goodness sakes! So I am one of the many Mainers that is sick and tired of people commiting crimes and getting none or next to no punishment.

Posted By:Rumford Native at September 20, 2008 7:18 PM (Suggest Removal) By the way Skip, I agree with you, too. There is not one valid reason to rob a bank. Or store, home, or person. I hope she does jail time and makes restitution to Ms. Osgood.

Posted By:Ph.D.iva at September 20, 2008 9:15 PM (Suggest Removal) May I take this time to pen a bed-time story for the folks who spend 75% of their time bashing other bloggers instead of posting intelligent comments concerning the story at hand on this website---namely "Skip". You assume my "involvment" in drugs due to my knowledge of such. Perhaps one should consider my "involvment" in the drug treatment/therapy industry and being a fan of the TV show COPS as being my intimate knowledge base, BUT NO, small minds think in dirty little ways. Immensely pleased to understand you have neither a dog nor a wife, because it's getting about that time of night where men like you kick their wife and beat their dog! THERE, how's that for bashing another blogger with absolutely NO reference to the story. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW? As Steve Wilkos would say, "Skip, you are truly a belly-rubber, a knucklehead, AND A MORON!"..............................................................................................

Hey-MORON, I TOLD YOU she looked like she needed another xanax. Or maybe that's what you're on, explaining why you have no wife---NOR dog. MORON P.O.S.,..........(How's that for a personal attack on another blogger-GET A LIFE! Learn to spell also, while you're at it. Have I seen you in any of my drug therapy sessions?

She has no kids and her entire family is trash. She has a history of drug use & I hope she spends some time behind bars thinking about how STUPID she was to try something like this.

She has no kids of her own and she has always had issues. This Dad finally pulled himself away and thank god before something happened to the kids. She is NOT stable by any means!
