It's cruise ship season in Maine

Sunday, September 21, 2008

PORTLAND (AP) - Four cruise ships are making stops in Portland in the next six days, carrying more than 8,700 passengers among them.

The 916-foot Grandeur of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean ship carrying 1,950 passengers, will call on Portland on Saturday for a daylong stop before departing for Bar Harbor.

On Sunday, the Jewel of the Seas, a 962-foot Royal Caribbean ship, stops in port with more than 2,100 passengers. It will also stay the day before leaving Sunday night for Bar Harbor.

On Monday, the Carnival Victory, an 893-foot Carnival Cruise Line ship carrying more than 2,700 passengers, will stop for a daylong visit before departing for Saint John, New Brunswick.

Finally, the 965-foot Constellation owned by Celebrity Cruises comes to port on Thursday with some 1,900 passengers. It will stay the day as part of a 12-day New England-Eastern Canada cruise.

What is amusing is that while the majority of the passengers on these ships are American you will not now or can you find any evidence in the past that any of the licensed officers and very few of the crew members on these ships are American. The companies will tell you outright that it is because even with the weak dollar American seamen cost too much. What they won’t tell you is that none of the officers or crew members on these ships pay taxes to ANYBODY. If Americans could work tax free and still have health care from this country they could also work on one of these ships for even less. You won’t hear this side of the argument from the Bush administration or the McCain campaign when you ask why they hate American Merchant Seamen so much. Whenever the Bush/McCain cartel tout globalization you never hear about the hidden subsidies given many foreign workers in the way of a tax free environment.
