Allen's coffee brandy sells 1 million bottles in Maine

Sunday, October 5, 2008

BANGOR - (AP) Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy has become the first brand of alcohol to sell more than 1 million bottles in Maine in a single year.

According to the Maine Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations, 1,024,282 bottles of various sizes of the liqueur were sold in Maine in the 2007 fiscal year. That's about 30,000 more bottles than in 2006.

Because the state tracks the sales of different sizes of alcohol brands separately, Allen's held the Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 spots among Maine's best-sellers in terms of bottles sold.

Michael Boardman, assistant director of the state's alcohol bureau, was at a loss to explain why Allen's sells so well in Maine.

"We're not really sure. A lot of people ask that question," he said. "It's very unique to Maine. It doesn't do well in most other locations."

Allen's is produced by M.S. Walker of Somerville, Mass., which says it has been the best-selling spirit in Maine for more than 20 years. Because of the brisk sales, it is sometimes called "the champagne of Maine."

The 1.75-liter Allen's bottle was the top-selling size in Maine in 2007, followed by its one-liter bottle, according to the alcohol bureau. The .375-liter bottle was the No. 4 seller, with the .75-liter bottle ranking fifth.

The 1.75-liter bottle of Orloff vodka was the state's No. 3 selling bottle.

In all, Maine retailers sold more than $12.2 million of Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy products last year.

Having owned a bar I can tell you this nothing to brag about. It usually graduates drinkers to have a splash of vodka added to it. I have watched more people get addicted to those coffee flavored brandy dregs than any other hard drink.

Mainers who drink Allen's should be ashamed of themselves. Support local businesses. Gold Crown makes a better coffee brandy right in Lewiston. Allens is made in Massachussets. If every Allen's drinker would switch, Gold Crown would be able to expand their distillery and hire new production workers. That's how to create jobs in Maine.
