Posted By:NightCrawler at October 9, 2008 5:20 AM (Suggest Removal) 907 new jobs? Who needs them! It's more important to keep those evil casinos away from here. We don't need Vito and Vinnie breaking fingers and knees. We don't need Trixie and Dixie standing on the street corner turning tricks. We don't need those out-of-staters coming in here and spending their millions! And we certainly don't want those millions of dollars in revenue that the local, county and state governments will receive. Vote no!

There have been tough times lately for some of the other NE casinos, and look at what happened to Atlantic City. There are risks here. Then again, Oxford County has little to lose any more. Their economy is mobile homes and snowmobile trails. At some point, you have to be open to anyone holding out goodies by the side of the road.

Posted By:David at October 9, 2008 10:23 AM (Suggest Removal) I don't deny that jobs are important. This referundum is written to benefit the owners of the casino, not the people of Maine, not the casino employees, not the state or local governments. They throw out enough to make it look like a good thing but it could be a lot better. The proposal was written by the casino owners. If you want a casino that provides maximum benefit to the state and people of Maine, vote this down. Start another referundum to direct the legislature to write the rules to allow a casino to be built in Maine. If you are going to do something, do it right. Olympia Gaming is not doing it right for anyone but themselves.

I am a father of three kids living in rumford and I work at a convienence store barley pulling in 20 hours a week. I have looked and applied and even gone so far as to beg for a better job and you know what they arent here. I am willing to bet that 90 percent of those people who want to vote no are those who have no idea what it is like to lay awake at night wondering how your going to give your kid ten bucks for a school field trip without haveing to cut out a meal. Over 900 jobs with an average income of over 30000 dollars a year. Lets think about that. Why dont you zealots who wanna preach the evils of casinos in your state go stand in front of your local beano parlor or corner gas station that sells lottery tickets by the hundred on a daily basis and preach about the evils of gambling. As for me I plan to vote yes. I will tell anyone who will listen vote yes. My family deserves better and if this is how I get it for them then by God I will push it to the end.

The workers seem happy. There's nothing for miles around it, so there is no crime for miles around it. I don't know how crime is in the nearest towns. However, it is VERY sad to watch the busloads of people coming in just to gamble. I might vote no on moral grounds. Anyway, I wish they wouldn't ask the whole state to decide the future of one county.

Rather than pay to gather signatures for a properly worded initiative, the proponents of this initiative decided to the claim the legislature would revise the language of their flawed initiative if voters passed it.
Claiming what the still-to-be elected legislature would do in the event Question 2 passed is called wild speculation. The buffoons behind this flawed initiative have demonstrated that they can’t be trusted and thus have no business operating a casino in Maine. I would have replied earlier, but I had to go for surgery to have my tongue removed from my cheek LOL. As someone who was born and raised in Rumford and moved away years ago, it make my heart sick to see the deterioration in the River Valley and all of Oxford County. I'm not necessarily a fan of the casino, but if that's the only industry interested in locating in Oxford County and reversing a negative trend in jobs, home values and quality of life, then I'm all for it.
And for all of you political crazies, this topic is neither Democratic nor Republican. So let's keep the politics out of this discussion, OK?

OR
Sheesh may be a landholder/ property owner who wanted to bring up children in a rural/farm environment, and may not be overly excited to think about the rural property/farm property rezoned by the community to mixed/commercial use with tax values rising incrementally because they live on a road that goes to the Casino.
Sheesh may be a person who understands that there ARE state and local expenses associated with this kind of development that the developer ISN'T going to FRONT UP big bucks while under construction. The premise is.... you'll get it back LATER, through that percentage $$$$ from profits.
Percentage $$$ won't flow until there is business enough to ascertain Profit. How many years out might that be?
All we are hearing now are Promises, Promises, and more Promises. We aren't all seeing or discussing that there will be a whole LOT MORE to negotiate and vote on when and if this POS Question 2 passes.
Question 2 is poorly written and an embarrassment to EVERY voter in the State of Maine.
Question 2 asks every registered Maine voter to step AWAY from current state law and with a single check mark , be on line to call for a wholesale rewrite of gaming law, alcohol sale, labor law, local control, and just generally our Due Process in favor of Olympia Gaming LLC.
Since when, in any county of Maine, has a $35 K family income been enough to raise a family and own a home?
If we are going to bring statewide gaming to the table for State and Local ( mutual) benefit, we need to do so in an appropriate, responsible, and transparent manner. Question 2 as writ is irresponsible at best, deceptive at worst, and begs MORE questions to be resolved at a "later date"
I can't vote yes to this piece of work.

For example the initiative declares the proponent “exclusive gaming facility in the state,” other than “commercial tracks” which are restricted to slot machines. That sentence is likely the biggest giveaway to a single company in the history of the state.
Does that mean the state has to close the lottery? What about our federally recognized tribes who operate state-sanctioned bingo and are requesting slot machines? What happens if the state or federal government finds the company in violation of a criminal law? What happens if the company goes bankrupt? There is only one possible conclusion with this initiative, and that’s VOTE NO!

As far as the BS about farm land, if you knew Oxford at all you would know how Stupid your statement is, you can't rezone with out a vote of the town and these folks are on top of it. Think of the big picture and open your mind. I am blown away that we have respectable jobs attempting to come in and you want to pull the Morale card.. How about the morality of letting an already depressed area go further down knowning you talked people out of it. Good luck sleeping tonight.
