Store comes under planning review

Friday, October 10, 2008

FARMINGTON - Due to Monday's holiday, the Planning Board will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at the town office.

Peter Beane of Farmington will come before the board to apply for a permit to convert his apartment building at 105 Water St. into a commercial space for a second-hand store called The Westside.

Pending approval, store owner Susan LeJoy of Farmington plans to open on Nov. 6, she said Thursday.

Recycle, reclaim, reuse are words LeJoy wants to put into practice with secondhand items, and next spring, the store will make a shift by adding green items to the first floor space, she said. The move to green will add solar lights and wind generated items to a collection of used items that she has accumulated from clearing houses in her other business, Cole's Carpet Cleaning Service.

LeJoy plans to open through the holidays and then close over January and February, leaving the building unheated during the winter months. She plans to reopen in March, she added.

"I have some unique and fun stuff. I can't get my van into my garage because of the items I've stored," she said as she named everything from dishes to furniture. Some items will be geared toward college students starting apartments, she added.

The Planning Board will also consider a revision of a previously approved campus plan for Franklin Memorial Hospital to include a landscape courtyard.
