Proposed casino site not what Rumford was hoping for

RUMFORD - Townspeople were disappointed in Thursday's announcement that casino backers had picked Oxford for their proposed resort.
"It's quite disappointing, but what are you going to do?" Board of Selectmen Chairman J. Arthur Boivin said.
Rumford selectmen had endorsed locating the casino in the area if Maine voters OK'd it next month and area voters supported it.
Boivin said he understood why Las-Vegas based Olympia Gaming chose Oxford: because of its proximity to the turnpike. However, he believes Rumford would still benefit.
"We'll see a slight amount of benefit from it involving a few more jobs and they'll create some tours that will hit that casino, so there could be some good economic benefits," Boivin said.
Town Manager Len Greaney was dismayed by the news but not willing to admit Rumford couldn't become a host site.
"I'm disappointed that we didn't have a specific set of visits here by Olympia to talk to our officials," Greaney said.
"Our selectmen voted 3-2 to support it and that was later superseded by a 4-0 vote. I haven't ruled out the possibility that as this goes forward, that if the people of Rumford support it in November and a specific location is not yet sited, then we may still have a chance. If they haven't signed a contract, I haven't thrown in the towel yet.
"That's why it's all-important if the Rumford people would like it, then they have to show support for it, not just the officials," he said.
Dave Duguay of Byron said he would have liked to have seen it in Rumford.
"I wish it was going to be here, if it passes. We could definitely use the jobs," he said. Rep. Sheryl Briggs, D-Mexico, a former Norway resident, said Thursday evening that she, too, was sad to see Oxford get it.
"I'm disappointed that it's not closer to our area, because it should be more centrally located to our area," she said.
"Although it is not that far away, people will have the opportunity to relocate closer or commute. I think that is a good location, though, because of the business district, its economic development and how it is growing for them. They have more opportunities for more employees.
"I'm thankful that it is in Oxford County and I hope it passes, because we are in so desperate of a need for economic development in western Maine, so it is good that it will be creating more jobs and more growth in our area," she said.
She said the location is prime, with its proximity to Oxford Plains Speedway, the Maine Turnpike, Route 26 from Bethel and central and northern New Hampshire and Route 121 from Auburn.
"I hope the state will support it. ... I've heard a lot of good things about the one in Bangor, so I really think it can work in Western Maine, too. I'd like to see us give it a try," Briggs said. |

That's how you help the old "home town" - take your "Maine based, Maine owned, Maine operated" casino meant to help RUMFORD, sell out to an out-of-state company so they can build it in a town that ISN'T RUMFORD!! I smell herring...

Let's see...more jobs...more police jobs, more counseling jobs, more overseers of welfare, more medical staff to take care of abuse, alcoholism, etc. Are those really the jobs you covet?

Do you have any idea how insane it will become with a casino added to the mix??? Good luck Vote " NO" residents of Oxford!

Posted By:dave at October 10, 2008 8:27 AM (Suggest Removal) Say something a little more intelligent. Brad and Rob had nothing to do with what Olympia Gaming decided. They do this for a living and they picked Oxford for business reasons; 2 small town selectmen had nothing to do with it. What a stupid comment.

Posted By:andre at October 10, 2008 8:49 AM (Suggest Removal) I hope that the vote is yes for all the jobs and trickledown that will take place, yes there will be problems as there are when any big company brings jobs to any area the whole scare tactic of the no'ers is very funny,my disapointment with oxford being selected is that our officials as stated in the article were sitting back waiting for this group to come to them and what they should have been doing is an agressive campaigning for the area, not that it had to be built in Rumford ,but maybe some where closer on rt 2 where there is already alot of tourism coming up through and down rt 2,but the selectman were not agressive and did not go to the olympia group ,they sat back and once again RUMFORD AREA loses out on this chance.they should have put together a promo tape showing the area and the advantages of having it closer to here.they should have been able to show some land where they were thinking about putting it.....i guess this all doesnt matter now....we lost walmart,we lost subway,we lost LL bean,at least we still have a perfect record, this town better get agressive or we will have no town, people will have to leave, and not by choice..

Posted By:andre at October 10, 2008 9:07 AM (Suggest Removal) THE statement made by bovin is so typical of not just this group of selectman but past groups also,OH WELL WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO,ITS TO BAD,thats because these guys or at least most of them over the years are all retired from there jobs ,they all get there pensions and have plenty to eat and oil in there tanks and wood to burn in the winter and food on there tables.i have asked some of these gentleman about an issue going on right now with the tearing down of apartments around town, where i lived before the town had a similar problem, they went to the state and got grants to buy the buildings use local help to refurbish them and then put people back into them, the town would then have a year to find a buyer for the buildings ,but in the meantime they created jobs for the local economy and when all was done sold the buildings and made a minimal profit which they put towards the next project..and the jobs put mon ey back into the local economy, lewiston and auburn were able to get grants to fix up there mills and create some good jobs out of it,how come we cant get a grant or grants to do the same thing around here???i was told we tryed ,thats it,we tryed once, you know who should be on the board of selectman? unemployed peolpe, people who have worked hard all there lifes and now find them selfs looking in from the outside,at least they would fight for this town and would fight and get creative in bringing jobs to this area.have the selectman ever heard of putting together a program of tapes and infor showing the ggod things that are here? have they ever thought about long term leases on land for small amount and some kind of tax break to get some big manufacting companys to at least take a look at us,years ago if you said you were from RUMFORD people from all over new that that meant thatyou were a solid worker who worked hard and gave an honest days work and supported your community,we use to have a pretty solid reputation as people here...not anymore and its sad to see these guys we vote in do nothing for anyone but them selfs ,cmon selectman there are job expos all over the country all year long put together a group of knowledgeable people and send them to these fairs and get agressive and get some of these companys ,who are out there looking to relocate to places that will help them grow there companys, get off your asses for a change and start thinking about the people that voted you in to your postion, stop waiting for the jobs to come to you,GO GET THEM..

Posted By:ANDY at October 10, 2008 1:31 PM (Suggest Removal) Well, I do believe it is a reality that the casino is coming to Oxford. What a GREAT thing for them and Maine. I only wish Rumford would have seen the light and jumped on a chance to help out our area. They always keep their heads buried in the sand to opportunities that could help us "low wage earners/high taxed" citizens. When the citizens change jobs for better pay and benefits who will fill these jobs? Say Good-bye to Rumford and surrounding towns!

Posted By:Chris (Brunswick) at October 10, 2008 1:58 PM (Suggest Removal) Please VOTE NO ON QUESTION 2, as this initiative is little more than a giveaway to legal tricksters. For example the initiative declares the proponent “exclusive gaming facility in the state,” other than “commercial tracks” which are restricted to slot machines. That sentence is likely the biggest giveaway to a single company in the history of the state.
Does that mean the state has to close the lottery? What about our federally recognized tribes who operate state-sanctioned bingo and are requesting slot machines? What happens if the state or federal government finds the company in violation of a criminal law? What happens if the company goes bankrupt? There is only one possible conclusion with the legal tricksters sponsoring this initiative, and that’s vote NO!

Posted By:sable1974 at October 10, 2008 4:44 PM (Suggest Removal) this is a very sad thing for me to have to have read...rumford is suffering sooo badly and our own selectmen don't give a rat's ass..if they did they would have bucked up and ran after this situation not just sat there and said what should we do..something they seem to do often..as far as anti-casino response, are you serious, you know what you do not have an open mind or somewhat positive mind at all, what is wrong with you...yeh there is gonna be some issues and yeh there would definately need to be some upgrading of town needs, but this is life now and you need to go with it, you can't be afraid of change, cause god knows we need it here...maine is the last state to get into anything.. we are sooo far behind all these other states..i've been to other states and can't believe the differences, it's kinda sad..this casino could've been the best thing for us..so much for that..such a loss..i guess people don't realize how many of us are gonna end up relocating from here because we are slowly but surely turning into a ghost town that supports nothin but well-fare, and that's sooo the truth..you one sided people will someday regret your comments and your unopened eyes..such a sadness....

Posted By:Jake at October 10, 2008 5:48 PM (Suggest Removal) The Casino was never going to be located in Rumford, everyone was lead on by Seth. If it was, the referendum would have been titled something like Vote for a Casino in Rumford. Not somewhere in Oxford County. Soon as I read Oxford County I knew then it was never coming here.
