2 arrested after shots fired in Jay

Saturday, November 22, 2008

JAY - Police arrested two local men early Friday morning after a report of shots fired near 80 Main St., police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

Arrested back to back and only a few hours apart were Craig Brewster, 23, and Brandon Parker, 22. The two lived in separate apartments at 80 Main St., police said.

Brewster was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and reckless conduct with a firearm and issued a summons for possession of drug paraphernalia, White said.

Parker was arrested a few hours later on a charge of terrorizing and summoned to court on a charge of criminal mischief.

Both men were taken to the Franklin County jail.

Brewster's arrest came after neighbors reported shots being fired at about 1:45 a.m.

Jay officer Mike Mejia and reserve officer John Irving investigated with help from Livermore Falls police officers Joe Sage and John Furr, White said.

The officers discovered bullet casings on the porch of the apartment building and Mejia heard people inside talking loudly. When he went to the apartment where the noise was coming from, Mejia was confronted outside by Brewster, who was intoxicated and disorderly, White said.

Brewster told them someone else was in his apartment, White said.

Worried somebody may have been injured in a shooting, police went to the apartment door but nobody answered so they entered looking for a possible victim.

Inside police found Parker, who appeared to be under the influence and was lying on the couch, White said.

As police were leaving the apartment they noticed two shotguns and a 9 mm handgun with ammunition, which was the same type and caliber as the casings found on the porch, White said.

Parker, who was not immediately charged with a crime, left the apartment to go back to his, and Brewster was taken to the Franklin County jail in Farmington.

But about 3:45 a.m. police received a second complaint of windows being broken and shots being fired at a house at 84 Main St., White said.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department, at Mejia's request, called White and Jay police Sgt. Troy Young to help, White said.

All the officers who responded to the first call along with the additional officers and Sheriff's Cpl. Nate Bean surrounded the apartment building at 80 Main St. where the victims believed the shots had come from, White said.

Mejia and Young went to Parker's apartment because the victims reported Parker had threatened people, White said.

Police started looking at the evidence at 84 Main St. and found it appeared Parker had thrown rocks breaking three windows there, White said.

Parker was arrested.

White estimated damage to the small windows at $100.

Both men were released on bail about noon Friday; Brewster on $3,000 unsecured; and Parker on $500 cash, according to a corrections officer. Both men are scheduled to appear in court Jan. 22, 2009.

This is the kind of trash that moves into section 8 housing sucks off the state and creates problems for neighbors and a burden on tax payers. Time to revamp Section 8 slum lords and make them more responsible for the people they attract. rents are so high in southern maine that they have to move north to get the free housing that they need to stay home all day.

First of all, I live at 80 Main St and I am not on section 8. I work hard for my paycheck and do not collect off the State of Maine. The landlord is not a slum lord in fact my apartment is quite nice. The alleged crime sounds a lot worse on a police report. Maybe someone shot at a skunk? A very stupid action but there was no "shoot out at the okay corral". Just because some people do not use "common sense" doesn't mean they are a "Low class citizen". Stop classifing people because of their address and gets your facts straight before stating your opinions because we all know what opinions are like.

Im tired of the actions of this man. He has had other trouble in the past. Shooting at that time of night and sheila thnks its ok. Then a frend scares the people next door and thats ok. Some one justmaking a mistake? I dont think so!I do agree its not anyone elses fault and not section 8.

I never said it was ok, I think it was pretty stupid. I am not condoning the actions, Just think that people shouldn't judge everyone else. Problems in his past have been minor and who doesn't have a skeleton or two?

well i live 61 main street across the street from 80 main street and i have never had a problem with them....but draging this kind of petty drama into a newspaper site online is just plain wrong....as for what parker and brewster did yes it was wrong but EVERYONE in this world does something wrong they shouldnt have done what they did, but as you all fullgrown adults need to take the drama out of the site....what happened happened im sure they will pay for it

Firstly to the commenters--not every apartment resident in Jay is a townie or trash. I most likely make more money then you and are way more classy and educated than you, and I live in an apartment. And that 80 Main Street apartment is ill kept and run down and the landlord needs to choose better who he or she has to live there. Sounds like they don't do a great job screening, if they want to shoot up people, move to Lewiston. It happens all the time there. But get off your high horse, there are way more trashy and nasty people doing worse stuff living in East Jay or wherever in a house than in apartments.

Haha Sheila makes me laugh: "Just because some people do not use "common sense" doesn't mean they are a "Low class citizen"." Pretty much that is what it means. I think youll find that most "low class citizens" rarely use common sense, case in point--Parker and Brewster.
