Stranded dolphin dies on L.I. beach

FIRE ISLAND, Long Island (AP) – Efforts to save the life of a dolphin stranded on a Long Island beach failed when the 250-pound animal died before help could arrive.

The male striped dolphin was found beached Friday afternoon at Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island.

Swimmers spotted the dolphin and alerted lifeguards, who maneuvered the animal back into the water and called the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation.

Before staffers could get to the dolphin, it beached itself again.

Rob DiGiovanni, the foundation director, said it’s not uncommon for striped dolphins to beach themselves at this time of year. Marine scientists were examining the dolphin’s body to try to figure out what went wrong.
