Show to look at vernal pools

Among legislative accomplishments this year is a measure to increase protection for the woodland wetlands known as vernal pools. The legislation caps over 10 years of work by state departments working with landowners and developers to craft added protection for the pools.

The legislation won a unanimous endorsement from the Natural Resources Committee and passed without controversy after several months of committee negotiations.

The developments are discussed on this week’s State of the State cable TV show. Guests on the show are Rep. Ted Koffman, D-Bar Harbor, House chairman of the Natural Resources Committee, and Judy Gates, assistant director of Environmental Services for the Department of Transportation. The host is Christopher St. John, executive director of the Maine Center for Economic Policy.

The show airs on Adelphia Channel 9 at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and repeats at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 13 and 14. The show also airs at times to be determined on public access stations in Harpswell, Farmington, Bath, and Baileyville.
