Students go behind the scenes

RUMFORD – The kindergarten and first grade classes at St. Athanasius St. John School have been studying nutrition and the food pyramid.

Besides learning how to sort foods into each group, the children have also learned what each food provides to their growing bodies. The students took a trip to Hannaford Supermarket to learn more about food.

Hannaford welcomed the two classes for a tour. They were taken “behind the scenes” and watched people as they worked in the bakery, deli, stock room, butcher shop, food coolers and freezers. They learned that most of the fresh fruits and vegetables are shipped great distances to be sold in Maine.

They created a healthy snack called “Cat’s Eyes.”
