Students take part in Holocaust memorial

NORWAY – Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School ninth-grade students participated in a midmorning program at the Norway Memorial Library on April 25 to observe National Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The students, members of Kristi Boucher’s and Donna McCarthy’s literacy and reading classes, had studied the Holocaust and read a fictional book, “Daniel’s Story,” based on the event.

At the library, the students listened to a presentation of fiction and nonfiction books about the Holocaust written for young adults and watched a video about Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, including a segment of his Nobel Peach prize acceptance speech in 1986.

They also heard local writer and poet Lisa Moore read from her 2006 biography, “Elie Wiesel: Surviving the Holocaust, Speaking Out Against Genocide,” part of a book series written for students called “Holocaust Heroes and Nazi Criminals.”

Students also had an opportunity to ask Moore about writing a book, gathering information and working with a publisher.
