PORTLAND (AP) – The weather began to warm slightly on Saturday but not before Old Man Winter got in a parting shot.

The temperature dipped to 7 below for the consecutive second night of subzero weather in Portland, said Steve Capriola of the National Weather Service.

That represented the coldest temperature recorded in Maine’s largest city since it hit 13 below on Jan. 22, 2005, Capriola said. But it was nowhere near the record low for the date: 18 below set in 1994, he said.

Temperatures varied across Maine. In Augusta, it bottomed out early Saturday at 1 degree but it was minus 9 in Bangor. It was even colder in Aroostook County with lows of minus 10 in Caribou and minus 13 in Presque Isle, the weather service said.

The temperature was expected to rise with highs in the 20s for the next couple of days, but it’s still below normal for this time of year, Capriola said.
