Sumner man injured in weekend motorcycle crash in Buckfield

BUCKFIELD — A Sumner man was taken by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center following a Saturday afternoon motorcycle crash on Route 140 at the Buckfield-Sumner town line.

Channel 8 WMTW reported Sunday that the man, Jason Merriem, 29 of Sumner, was unable to stop his motorcycle in time and crashed his bike into the side of a van driven by 81-year-old Mildred Newton of Buckfield. Newton was turning left from Route 140 onto Jordan Road but didn’t see Merriem’s oncoming motorcycle.

Channel 8 reported on its website that Merriem had head and leg injuries that were considered serious but not life-threatening.

The crash was investigated by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, which told the television station that Merriem was not wearing a helmet and that both vehicles were destroyed.
