TB case hits EL

AUBURN – A case of tuberculosis has been identified in an Edward Little student, school officials told School Committee members Wednesday night.

The student, who wasn’t named, is not attending school and is being treated, said Assistant Superintendent Tom Morrill.

Edward Little officials are working closely with the Maine Centers for Disease Control and the school doctor. Students and staff who had close contact with the student, between 100 to 120 people, will be tested for TB.

TB is either a bacterial or viral disease that affects the lungs. It spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes, sending germs into the air. Typically a person can get TB only when in prolonged, close contact with the infected person.

Informational letters have been sent home to parents.

A public information meeting about the disease, and how the case is being handled, will be held at Edward Little at 6:30 tonight.
