Teacher charged with assault

RICHMOND, R.I. (AP) – A middle school teacher has been charged with slapping a 12-year-old student in the face during class.

William Farrell, 53, a teacher at Chariho Middle School, was charged with simple assault. He was suspended from his job as a computer teacher while the district investigates last week’s incident, Chariho Superintendent Barry Ricci said Thursday.

The 12-year-old boy and his father filed a complaint against Farrell at the Richmond police station. The boy reported being slapped in front of his classmates by his computer teacher, and other students who were interviewed corroborated the complaint, police said.

Police Chief Raymond A. Driscoll.

Farrell turned himself in on Saturday and told a police officer at the station “that he was only joking around,” Driscoll told the Westerly Sun.

“But he never indicated why he would be joking around,” Driscoll said.

Farrell was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court April 13.
