Jeff Bailey of Mountain Valley High School in Rumford, left, receives a 2017 Lawrence W. O’Toole Award from Nick Donohue, president and CEO of the Nellie Mae Education Foundation. Bailey was one of 12 educators recognized with this $15,000 award for leading efforts to advance and scale student-centered approaches to learning in public high schools and districts throughout New England. A technology teacher, Bailey implements flipped learning in his classroom, allows students to move ahead at their own pace and provides individualized feedback to his students. He also serves as the chairman for the district’s instructional technology committee and offers workshops for his colleagues. He will use the grant to create a teacher reflective practice group, focused on sharing approaches to student-centered classrooms using the Students at the Center framework, and to support listening sessions where students express their visions for education and help inform the actions of the teacher reflective practice group.
