LEWISTON – Two teenagers were accused of setting a fire Friday afternoon on Boxer Island beneath the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge.
The 4 p.m. blaze on the wooded parcel in the Androscoggin River brought out fire crews from both sides of the river. After climbing down from the bridge, Auburn firefighters put out the fire within minutes. They were joined by Lewiston crews who helped snuff out flames smoldering in tree limbs and leaves.
The fire was first reported by a passer-by on North River Road in Auburn. The blaze could also be seen from the nature trails behind Tall Pines Drive in Lewiston.
According to Lewiston fire Capt. Larry Morin, the teenagers accused of setting the fire may be ordered to attend the department’s Juvenile Fire Setters Prevention Program.
The fire remained under investigation Friday night.
