Teens will perform a cappella for ‘Joining Voices 2’

TURNER -— Four local high-school groups will join forces on Saturday, May 1, to present “Joining Voices 2,” a concert of a cappella music, at the Leavitt Area High School auditorium.

Performing will be Vocal ELoquence from Edward Little High School in Auburn; Diaboli Musicae from Lewiston High School; The Hornets of Harmony from Leavitt; and The Mt. Blue Voices from Mt. Blue High School in Farmington.

The ensembles will sing a cappella versions of Elvis and Springsteen songs as well as other classics.

Richard Rau, who co-directs Vocal ELoquence with Beth LaBrie, is concert producer. He was a member of the local a cappella quartet Top Forty for many years, performing a cappella standards, doo-wop, pop and jazz. He has been involved for 16 years with the annual a cappella concert Battle of the Blends, a fundraiser for the Maine Music Society.

“Many high schools today have an a cappella chorus. They learn great vocal techniques, interact with each other musically and they start writing their own arrangements. When our students get to college, they are well prepared to join an a cappella group,” Rau said.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students; children under age 5 admitted free with an adult. Tickets will be sold at the door. All proceeds will help support choral programs at the four high schools. For more information, go to www.joiningvoices.webs.com.
