‘The Other Dickens’ to be presented at LPL

LEWISTON — Lillian Nayder will be the featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Friends of the Lewiston Public Library which will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in the library’s Callahan Hall. She will talk about her newly published book, “The Other Dickens: A Life of Catherine Hogarth.”

Nayder is a professor and chair of the English Department at Bates College. Following the presentation she will sign copies of her book which will be available for sale at the program. This Friends of LPL event is free and open to the general public.

Her book is the first comprehensive biography of Hogarth. The book explains that after 22 years of marriage and 10 children, Charles Dickens forced Catherine from their home, unjustly alleging that she was mentally disordered. The novelist’s version of events remains widely held, but Nayder’s book debunks it, demonstrating that their marriage, instead, was a happy one for much of its duration.

The Friends of LPL business meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m., just prior to the public lecture program. All interested community members are also invited to attend the earlier meeting.
