PORTLAND — All Maine Catholics are invited to experience God’s love, mercy and forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation at “The Light is On for You,” a diocese-wide event to be held during the third week of Advent from Monday, Dec. 15, to Friday, Dec. 19.

Bishop Robert P. Deeley announced that in preparation for Christmas, each parish in Maine will offer confessions on at least three weekday evenings from 6 to 7 p.m.

In the Catholic faith, Reconciliation, which is also known as Penance or Confession, is one of the two sacraments of healing (the other is the anointing of the sick) given to the Church by Jesus, who offers sinners forgiveness for offenses committed against God and neighbor.

The penitent — the person who confesses his or her sins with sincere contrition — receives absolution from the priest, whose ministry in the name and person of Jesus effectively extends his forgiveness, and thus reconciles the individual to the Lord and his Church. The “seal of confession” guarantees the absolute confidentiality of both the penitent and the sins confessed.
