Three days added to tax deadline

Taxpayers will get a few extra days to file their state and federal income taxes this year, with Maine filers doing even better.

Normally, tax returns must be postmarked by April 15, but April 15 falls on a Saturday this year. For that reason, most of the country must file by the following Monday. For residents of Maine and Massachusetts, however, tax returns must be postmarked by midnight on Tuesday, April 18.

In those states, Monday is Patriot’s Day, so tax officials have extended the due date to Tuesday.
