Thunder rumble past Dogs

PORTLAND (AP) – Felix Escalona’s three-run homer was the big blow as the Trenton Thunder rallied for six runs in the ninth inning to beat the Portland Sea Dogs 7-5 Tuesday in the Eastern League.

Randy Ruiz homered and knocked a key double as the Thunder won their fourth straight.

Jeremy West homered for Portland.

The Sea Dogs (27-21) led 5-1 after eight innings. Doubles by Brandon Moss and Chad Spann sparked one Portland run in the second and two in the third. West’s two-run blast plated the Sea Dogs’ final runs in the eighth.

Ruiz’s solo homer put Trenton (26-25) on the scoreboard in the seventh.

Trailing 5-1 in the top of the ninth, Ruiz’s leadoff double opened the Thunder’s six-run rally; Escalona’s three-run blast over the left-field wall was the biggest hit. The first eight batters reached base and the Thunder capitalized on a crucial Portland fielding error.
