PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Tim Hortons chain of coffee shops says it's closing 36 restaurants and 18 kiosks in New England.
The Canadian company said Wednesday it would close locations in the Providence, R.I., and Hartford, Conn., areas. It's also closing two of its stores in the Portland, Maine, area.
Tim Hortons says it has lost $4.4 million this year on those locations.
It was not immediately clear whether the closings represented all Tim Hortons' locations in Southern New England. The company did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
Tim Hortons moved into southeastern New England in 2004 when it paid nearly $42 million for 42 coffee shops belonging to Rhode Island-based Bess Eaton.

Not Enough Retirees
There aren't enough retirees seeking super saver discounts to allow Tim Horton's to succeed in New England.

Tim Horton coffee has it all over Dunkin coffee. DD use to have a decent coffee but over the past years it has lost quality. I drink my coffee black and DD taste very watered down compared to Timmies. I was concerned at first but after reading the article I realized that most closures were in Southern NE. Hopefully the disease doesn't work it way north to the LA area. b

Tim Horton's in our area took over the Wendy's rest. I have tried their coffee and donuts several times given the time they have been here but nope...they are not as good as Dunkin. Our family wishes something else would move in to the one here. Apparently the closings, however, do not represent our region. Bummer.
