Train cars derail in Jay, road closed for two days

JAY —  Several railroad cars on a Pan Am Railways train derailed Thursday morning at the intersection of Crash Road in Jay.

It is the second time in 16 months train cars have derailed in the area. In January 2009, five cars derailed about 200 yards away from Thursday’s incident. In that case two cars tipped over, two were left leaning and two derailed. It was blamed on a broken rail.

Jay and State police officers were detouring vehicles around the Jay end of Crash Road and the Livermore end near Goding Road. Vehicles were given the option of going straight through Riley Road and around the Verso Paper’s Androscoggin Mill to Phipp’s Corner Road to Alder Stream Road that led back onto Crash Road.

The derailment wasn’t expected to be cleaned up until late Friday, officials said.
