Turkey struts no more

RUMFORD – Police Chief Stacy Carter had watched a nearly 20-pound tom turkey strutting across his lawn at his home on Burgess Hill for several days.

The chief is an avid hunter, but he felt it wasn’t fair to shoot the big bird without giving it a fair chance.

Someone else, though, didn’t have such reservations.

John Wesley, 21, of Dixfield, was summoned Thursday morning for discharging a firearm 36 yards from Carter’s home. Law states that firearms cannot be discharged within 100 yards from a building. The turkey was killed.

Carter said he was awakened at 5:37 a.m. by two shots. He was able to identify the truck. The driver was then summoned by the state Warden Service.
