Ugly win for Sea Dogs over Rock Cats

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) – David Murphy, Chad Durbin and Jeremy West drove in two runs apiece to lead the Portland Sea Dogs to a 12-4 win over the New Britain Rock Cats in a sloppily played Eastern League game on Monday.

Murphy, who hit .351 against the Rock Cats last year, drove in a fifth-inning run with a single.

He collected another RBI in the sixth when he doubled into a double play. Keoni DeRenne was caught in a rundown between third and home. After third baseman Matt Moses tagged DeRenne out, he flipped to left fielder Trent Oeltjen to nip Murphy trying to reach third.

Durbin also drove in runs with a single and double for the Sea Dogs (2-2). West had a two-run single in Portland’s five-run ninth.

Knuckleballer Charlie Zink (1-0) scattered four hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Jose Vaquedano.

Of the five runs surrendered by New Britain starter Errol Simonitsch (0-1), only two were earned. Denard Span had four of New Britain’s 13 hits. Doug Deeds hit his second homer of the season for the Rock Cats (1-3).

Seven different hitters had RBIs and eight scored runs for Portland.

The teams made three errors each, uncorked five wild pitches and made numerous base-running mistakes.
