UNH students settle dispute over Facebook

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) – A University of New Hampshire student who sought a restraining order against a man who posted an altered photo of her on the Internet has settled the dispute out of court.

The female student, who was a freshman at the time, alleged that student Owen Sanborn of Laconia posted a photo of her face on another woman’s body on Facebook.com, a popular social networking Web site.

She was granted a temporary restraining order in May, and a hearing to make it permanent was scheduled for Friday. But that hearing was canceled when the two came to an agreement, said Bryan Gould, the woman’s attorney.

As a result of the claim, Sanborn was subjected to a university disciplinary hearing, and a university spokesman said Friday that Sanborn is no longer a student.

Gould said the incident was part of an escalating pattern of behavior. It was reported to police but no criminal charges were filed.

Sanborn’s attorney, Stephen Laurent, said he had no comment on the case.
