Union 29 hires superintendent

MECHANIC FALLS – The Union 29 School Committee has hired Dennis Duquette as the superintendent for schools in Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland effective July 1.

“He has incredible energy, drive and enthusiasm. The committee overwhelmingly supported his nomination,” said Karen Whalen, chairwoman of the search committee.

Duquette served as Gorham Middle School principal for the past four years and is doing a superintendent internship with Ted Sharp, superintendent of Gorham Public Schools.

Duquette, who lives in Raymond, expects to complete his internship in June and will be available to take over for Nina Schlikin, Union 29’s outgoing superintendent, who steps down June 30 after four years.

Whalen noted that while this is Duquette’s first job as school superintendent, he has worked for nine years in school administration and eight years as a classroom teacher. He also has 11 years’ experience in the private sector as a manager and supervisor in the transportation industry.

“Duquette brings a diverse range of abilities and experiences. We look forward to having him on board,” said Whalen.
