I would rather a child learn by instruction than by trial and error with "real life" experimentation. When one is forewarned, one is forearmed. To have an adequate understanding of the bodily functions helps one to understand when something is "not quite right". And to consider the uterus "gross"? Moreso than the heart, kidney, epidermis or any other part of the human body? In the words of my 16 y/o niece "Oh Puleeeaze!!"

Correction. When the Native Americans in Connecticut built the casinos, they built them on their land. They then used the monies from the casino to help develop the roads to the casinos. When you have a business that relies on people getting to you, you tend to make sure the ability to get to you is available.
Having followed this issue in several of the local papers, I keep reading adults responses but have yet hear anything from the youngsters (students) this would directly affect. Has anybody bothered to consult with the student bodies? Or have we assumed that as adults we have all the answers and the students have no real say in reality of this issue? I know I'm going to get flak saying that kids don't really understand or as adults we need to protect these "innocent soles", but I've yet to hear the student's take on this issue.
There are no easy answers to this. Do we expose youngsters to others who are different? Do we make exceptions for those differences? Why is it important for a person going through gender transformation? Does, in the long run, it harm or help those who are involved (on both sides)? What allowances should be considered?
The knee jerk reactions I've seen, again from both sides, shows me that nobody is actually doing any research in this area, just spouting their opinions without regard to the actual people involved.
The young lady of whom you refered was speaking as a private citizen. She also fully expected that her volunteer position with the diocese would be in jeopardy.
Mr. Mendel did not speak as a private citizen but as a guidance counselor for the Nokomis High School. As a certified Social Worker/Guidance Counselor he is bound by specific rules in the contract for the position he fills through the NASW (National Association of Social Workers). If he had spoke as a private citizen, his certification would not be in jeopardy. He identified his postion within the school district and used it as a platform for making his comments. By do so, he brought the NASW into the fray in a manner which they do not wish to be associated. The complaint against him was filed by a fellow social worker who is bound by the same rules to report any misactions of a social worker.
