1) what makes anyone think

1) what makes anyone think that only Christians voted YES on one? I know non-Christians who did as well...

2) as for the comment comparing slavery...have you read of William Wilberforce? In the 1700's (before Abe Lincoln) he was a leader in the slave trade..he had a "conversion to Christianity" ...and THEN he became one of the leaders in the movement to abolish slave trade in England... imagine that.

The Episcopal bishop from NH

The Episcopal bishop from NH comes to Portland to speak in favor of the NO vote (one of the sponsors being the cathedral of st. lukes) and it has nothing to do with religion? there are plenty of fine speakers who are gay and NOT part of any religion who could have been asked to speak.

I am an Episcopalian. Right

I am an Episcopalian. Right or wrong, if a couple is not religious why should I tell them they can't have a legal union? On the other hand, if they aren't religious why isn't a legal union good enough if it provides the same benefits? Why a marriage in the church? There are many people in the Christian church who don't have an issue with same sex couples choosing legal unions. But marriage is often performed in the church by pastors, priests, ministers (of various denominations) who are to be carrying out God's will (as is made known through the scriptures) and granting God's blessing on the married couple. So there are many I've talked with as I've tried to get all angles on the subject who seem to take this view-civil unions are okay but not marriages in the church. The bigger issue for me is that many denominations (especially mine) are going the way of political correctness and drifting away from the teachings of the church, those very principles the church was built on. If the Episcopal church believes, as it has stated, that there is nothing wrong with same sex unions from the perspective of religion, then they really ought to go back and change their own canons (tenets, articles whatever they are called). The Episcopal church today isn't really the Episcopal church at all. It is a new church and thus needs to come up with a new set of articles to represent her (can I say' her 'still?) stand on the issue of marriage as well as other things. Until they rewrite the articles of faith the Episcopal church of today is NOT really the Episcopal church, it is a new church. Instead of changing the Episcopal church why not write up a new set of articles of faith and maybe change the name while you're at it.
As for the comments about the Catholic church, how is that not hate speech? The church is made up of people, just like any other group, so the remarks above are directed at people, not at an institution. In some of the comments above the writer has done the very thing you accuse the church of doing. Whether you agree or not it IS a religious issue and the church has the right to take a stand on something so important. As for the Catholic church losing people, per Wikipedia it is still the largest Christian denomination with 1.147 billion members in 2007.
