Much of the behavior seen at the DC "tea party" was disgusting, and I, too, want to apologize for those in my country who have so little decency and regard for others.

Good letter, Paul. It's looking to me like marriage equality is going to have to be attained through the changing of laws on the federal level, and if that's the way it has to happen, that's fine--after all, there are probably still some states today that wouldn't recognize marriages between people of different races if they hadn't been forced to. Sad, but true.

Don't give up. The younger generation are the future, and a strong majority of them support marriage equality. My son and his friends worked on his college campus to register voters and rally support for No on One, and it was the same story throughout colleges in Maine. I am proud of their ability to be open-minded, to embrace diversity, and to comprehend the basic facts of civil rights. The election results were frustrating and heartbreaking, but I truly believe it's only a matter of time.

I didn't know Sandy, but I always read her column, and when I read the column in which she revealed that her cancer had returned--even not knowing her except through her words--I cried.
