voting...

Can someone tell me why as a a registered independent* voter that I have to change partys to vote on issues aside from the Governors race. I can name 20 people off the top of my head that I know of who didn't get to vote on issues unless they changed parties.

hmmmmm

Let me get this straight....we; "townies" shouldn't post our biased opinions on here because this is between Bates and the LPD? So why are you on here giving your opinions? Sorry to hear about the Bates student killed years ago; I wasn't on this site back then and would've spoken out against it if I were! Last time I checked perfectly fine young men and women are doing stupid things like this. They're the ones who stayed out of it. No ones lives are perfect. I just hope they learn from the mistakes they made and us as well as themselves to move on.

In one whole paragraph you yourself laid judgment to everyone of the "townies" as being hypocritical. Quote; "everyone who has posted on this forum has made mistakes"; unless you knew each and every "townie" you can't lay claim to that. And to say that these students who worked hard to get into a top-25 institution is going to cure diseases and fix our economy is a bold statement. Unless you can see into the future you can't make that claim either. I'll put my money on the ones who left or were never there at all. Maybe you can help me understand how these particular students can be so educated yet have no common sense as to let the EMT's help the injured in need and disperse when asked by law enforcement. Just think; if this were (heaven forbid) your child the EMT's were trying to help would you still be supportive for the students or would you be supportive to the PD?

townies?

@allstate99: I'm a neighbor of Lewiston; not a townie. Last time I checked I could afford to go to bates if I wanted to. Maybe someday I will go back to college. Me; I not looking for ways to put these kids down nor make them look bad. They're doing a great job of that on their own! Tell me allstate99; what do you call successful? Does it have to do with money? Or does it have to do with how you live and how you treat others? Is a person successful because he/she is rich from wealth or is it because his/her life is rich from family and values??

choices; something to think about....

You as an individual make choices as to how your life is run. Either day-to-day or in government. We vote for people to help govern our lives in a society. We believe they will make the right decisions for us. They as well as ourselves decide how our laws are to be written. By you disrespecting the PD/EMT are in a sense disrespecting the decisions you made as an individual.

To whom it may concern...

I have nothing against college students and I know that drunk behavior by some but not all students is evident all over our nation. If the EMT's were not barred and were able to assist to the person in need then fine. But if they were and that was my child/wife/sister/GF (and this is to beantown861) I would have no respect for you (students) what-so-ever! An officer of the law is not* the law; but upholds the law. An EMT helps an injured victim in need. Depriving either of them from doing their jobs in itself is disrespectful. Not only to them but to the people they are helping. I grew up respecting the FD/PD/EMT's and never felt that I was the submissive person. I can walk down any street in any town/city in any state/nation world wide and would show respect to you as anyone should show to his/her fellow men/women. But disrespect me and I will disrespect you. If I was an officer of the law and you were running from me chances are you did something wrong. If the PD asked you to disperse you should disperse; and not hang around. An unruly crowd can't exist if there aren't people around egging it on.

I believe there's a dress

I believe there's a dress code for the city employees why not the councilors? If not I'll wait till someone shows up with a tank top, shorts, sandals and unshaven. Could happen if there's no dress code.

I used to bike those same

I used to bike those same trails over 10 years ago it's a shame bikers will get the boot and everyone else stays. But I guess it's our turn now. We kicked power boats off of lakes/ponds that we own camps/houses on. We kicked ice fishing/snowmobiles off of those same waters too. We kicked out hunters out of the woods we built our homesteads on. We kicked people off of beaches we now claim as private. We've all done it. Maybe we could have a park in and around some mountains and allow only mountain bikers only; then kick everyone else out.

Speeders are everywhere!

Speeders are everywhere! Every street around. Wanted a speed bump like on college rd in Lewiston put on a few roads in the city, but was told the city couldn't. We used to have a camera at a couple of intersections here in Auburn but that got shot down. In other states they have radar and cameras in one unit on several roads. But here I bet they would be shot down as well. Thing is, this would definitely generate revenue.

Point to add for this

Point to add for this article: most of the people I've talked to who voted yes on Q-1 did so not because they don't want gays/lesbians to be recognized as being wed; but because the state voted on this behind closed doors. This is not the way legislation should to conduct itself. I myself misinterpreted the last portion where I thought what was the control of religion by the state. My bad.

Lebearun; I watched the

Lebearun; I watched the video and your right except the church cannot rule the government despite how vast they are. They were kicked out a long time ago. If you want, I'll try to make a video of a non religious wedding that's been in practice for thousands of years and was accepted by everyone. It'll show a man clubbing a woman and dragging her home to reproduce. But it'll be in a modern setting of course.

This is to GaryC. I see your comparing yourself to animals that can reproduce asexually. Can you produce asexually? No? Then don't compare yourself to them.

tsk tsk tsk: such

tsk tsk tsk: such discrimination from both sides! I'm a native Mainer and to be labeled a bigot because I'm a catholic is discriminatory in itself by such open minded people. You take stabs at catholics who get divorces that they are not following their religion. I can name several couples who divorce after their spouse's comes out of the closet to pronounce that they are gay. If your so strong in your beliefs and if this is the way you were when you were born; why did you marry some one from the opposite sex to begin with? And why wait so many years to get there? You can call yourself open minded and nondiscriminatory when you can look at your fellow man and not judge him/her based on anything what-so-ever. Not on religion/sex/color/ideas/beliefs/gender. Yes the catholics supported the yes vote, but they aren't the only religion that's against it. So stop the name calling.

POINT TO PONDER: Did

POINT TO PONDER: Did everyone actually read the law that was passed? If you voted yes on 1; then you don't want gay/lesbian marriage to be legal and not be discriminated against and you do want the church to be held accountable for not recognizing nor marrying a gay/lesbian couple. If you voted no on 1: then you want gay/lesbian couples to be legal wed and not be discriminated against but you'll let the church not recognize your marriage nor marry you. Go figure? So.....

queenhoneybee I read just about every comment here and I found more negative comments coming from the no on 1 voters than from everyone else.

Yes many people that are

Yes many people that are catholics are divorcing. If you were to take every couple that were/are gay you would find a lot of them are breaking up or have found new partners as well. And if you really want to dig deeper you will find that some couples are sharing their partners with others just like some heterosexuals do too.

I'm all for gays to be in a

I'm all for gays to be in a civil union. But just the word marriage is a religious one. And last time I checked most don't approve of it. It's funny; yet hard to see groups that can raise millions of dollars to spend on a campaign; but little Johnny/Jane has to have a bean supper to raise money for an operation. Help your community your in not your beliefs. The moral majority have spoken. This is how we do things in this country. It sucks; not everyone wins. Try again? More power to you. I was shocked to learn that gay lifestyle information, support groups and other media are being plastered all over schools just like L.H.S. is now. I was surprised to see that in California (of all places) the courts went against gay marriage as well as several other states. Tell me; if catholic Mainers are such bigots and everyone in the gay community have so much love for their fellow humans; would you so kindly accept say what they find socially acceptable in the middle east? Where an older man can marry a teenage girl? If this came to our country would you accept it with open arms or would you dismiss this with distaste. Everyone is different.

Careful what you promise

Careful what you promise because it may might you in the butt later on. If these people didn't get any raises or lowered raises then the county would be at fault. But if any of them got raises or higher than normal raises then the commissioners are in the clear.

Still paid but unavailable? hmmm Can you say vacation? Cause if you were being disiplined you wouldn't be paid but still have a job. Anything else benefits the one not working.

Being a citizen w/o children

Being a citizen w/o children I would normally deter spending extra money in the school dept. But the need is there. Compare Lewiston's or Turner's high schools to ours and you'll see why. I would like to see the 3rd option with 1 additional request: make it "Green". Use solar, wind and geothermal devices in conjunction with the gas/oil heating system which would be installed. We'll save money in the long run, be ahead of other schools and possibly open up a new course or two in the school curriculum. Possibly get tax credits. Have a court yard like Lewiston has but with a glass enclosure over it (like a green house). It would provide an area for plant growth even in winter, provide a space in cold times for a science class and quite possibly add additional heat to the school thus reducing costs. But to simply build a school w/o any of these then no I don't want to.
