I have been wondering about the numbers on this vote since the original numbers were posted. The number of responses for the second half of the ballot "if you voted no" make me question it even more. Result #1 - 349 to 349 (tied), #2 - 349 to 344 (passed by 5), #3 - 348 to 344 (passed by 4), Now there's 40 votes possibly missing? And at the same time, part 2 of the ballot asked "If you voted no..." yet on the original results page on the city website there were, I believe, over 500 responses combined to either increase or decrease of the budget. If the vote passed then why were there so many more responses to part 2 than actual "no" votes. Maybe with such a close vote that is still in question, and this much controversy, they should veto the whole thing and have a new vote.
As it is seen in the article, you and your family should be proud. This is an example of how great kids can be. The family should be commended for raising such smart, level headed kids. Great job.
I never said anything about Katy Grondin or the job she was doing. I am merely commenting on the school budget and the lack of priority by the school board about iPads. Also, watch what your saying about whether people voted or not, you don't know one way or the other if I voted. But I do have a right to my opinion without being told to "grow up and be an adult".
I agree with Mr. Potvin. Its amazing, someone must have pulled extra votes out of their butt. Where did the extra votes come from? Someones pocket? Listen to the letter that Belinda Gerry read, alot of people feel this way. And the comment by our illustrious committee chairman about the low turnout. Some people feel they shouldn't bother because the school committee and city counsel rarely listen to us anyway. Maybe since the iPads are SO useful, they should (insert sarcasm here) cut some teaching positions and increase the size of the classes, no big deal since the iPads are doing the work anyway and some teachers have said, its like having multiple teachers in one room. The kids that excel, excel further while the ones that are struggling on a topic use them to TRY and improve. No child left behind? LOL. What happened to the hands on approach to get a child to understand a topic. That would save the budget a little money. If I don't have money in my budget for extra stuff, I go without. Other schools in the state are meeting or exceeding standards and they aren't providing iPads to such young children. We always hear about kids being in front of screens too much, the obesity problem among our kids, etc, but lets give them another excuse to sit in front of a screen. Wall-E.
The iPads for last year were supposed to be a grant also but never came through, so those came out of last years budget. This years are coming out of the budget, that is why they are added into it in the first place. They might be going for a grant but that would only repay for them IF it comes through. If it doesn't, it still comes out of the budget.
The other obvious thing, is that if the vote was that close, that means half the voters aren't happy with the budget. On a recount, if you find one extra vote one way or the other, shouldn't mean the vote stands. Rework and revote to win more of a majority one way or the other to get people to accept the budget. Dump iPads and get back to basics in the younger grades.
My vote would have gone differently if the iPads weren't in there. I would be happy to see an increase and pay a little more in taxes for my kids education if not for them. When I don't have the money for something, I go without. Maybe the school and city should do the same. Wall-E is our kids obviuos future.
My issue with the iPads is as follows: First of all, not all of us could make the hearing about the budget due to prior obligations, so to make it look like only one taxpayer spoke against it, is obsurd (maybe a couple of hearings would have been better). Secondly, We were told last year that the iPads were going to be paid for (at least partially) by a grant which never happen and we paid for them. Thirdly, we told that they were going to stay at the kindergarten only. Again WRONG. More misleadings. I want to also remind people that there are teachers that are retiring this year or soon thereafter and the plan at this point is to not replace most of these teachers. One teacher that I am speaking of is a reading teacher that works with high schoolers who are having difficulty reading or are learning challenged. She retires this year and may not be replaced. No room for a hands-on teacher, but lets stick our kids in front of another screen. No money to work on a new high school (our current one could be losing accreditation), but again, lets get iPads for kindergarteners. The high schoolers have less time left for education and experience with computer, so why not put more money there. Hands-on-Learning is a must. We ARE raising the next generation...but we are raising a generation that is going to rely on electronics for EVERYTHING. And we wonder why we have to worry about childhood obesity. Give the kids another screen. Remember Wall-E. Computers did everything as we sat on cushy lounge chairs and got FAT (couldn't even remember how to walk). If you haven't seen it then maybe you should and then think about it before we give the kids another screen.
Money doesn't buy a better education. My son is in the fourth grade in the Auburn School District and I am somewhat dissappointed. On a week that is shorter than the normal 5 days, they do not have a spelling lesson for the week. What? At one point that was about every other week (between holidays and workshop days). And now we are talking about iPads again. OMG, we are making our kids reliant on computers for everything. Then they come home and get on the computer again because they don't know any other way to entertain themselves. Leave the current iPads where they are (in Kindergarten) and invest the money for new ones into more teachers to educate the old fashioned way, with pen and paper. We REALLY need to get back to basics or we will all fail these kids.
First of all, though I don't feel I need to jusify my grammar on this, oooh, I used the wrong their, I WAS typing this comment at 5 a.m., at the end of a 12 hr shift. Secondly, you ARE wrong... The IPads stay in the Kindergarten and do NOT move up with them and new ones are NOT purchased each year (again, that would be at the taxpayers expence). I just got off the phone with the Auburn School Dept at City Hall and verified this. THirdly, I am sorry that you took my comment as an insult, but our kids need to learn the basics. I wasn't saying that teachers aren't doing their job, everyone is just getting away from the basics. I, for one, think these kids need time to learn with thier minds and only use tecnology as a backup for the first few years. When a teenager working in a store can't make change without the register telling them what the change should be, there is something wrong. There are better ways to spend the school budget money. Hire some aides. Wow, create some jobs(?), instead of cutting them (That would be an idea). This would give a lower teacher to child ratio and give the kids a better learning environment.
We were all initially told that the school committee had grant money coming in to pay for these and now we are told that we, the tax payer, who are already overburdened with the way the city the budget, are paying for these out of last years bugdet. We watched them make so many cuts to make the school budget to make it work but suddenly have all this money. Poor idea. If your going to do a program like this, then start at the higher grades. What happens for 1st through 6th grade or whenever they get the computers back. Learn in K then go without until..... I can think of other places in the school district that the money could have gone, how about some extra ed techs to help these moldable mind how to use there heads to do the basics before we stick a computer in there hand. I was at a local store and a Jr from EL panicked when the register went down and this person had to get help from the lead cashier to figure the change for a $18.65 purchase when I handed her a $20. Technology needs to slow down and get our youngest student back to basics and let the teacher do there jobs instead of the technolgy doing it for them.
Are you kidding? I guess I won't be eating at Denny's anytime soon, let alone allow my daughter to use the restroom there. I think that they need to reconsider this again. They need to think of the feelings of the other customers that got in there, not just the one. I, for one, am not comfortable with allowing a man into the womans room regardless of what sex he "feels" he is. Until the surgery is done, no way.

CLT should be ashamed, and just shot themselves in the foot because those that are against the building being closed are going to resent CLT for teaming with the businesses all this time and when push came to shove, they turned their back on them and looking out for themselves, CLT, only. I, for one, won't be going back to see a show anytime soon.

The problem was, people didn't go because the agenda item was for rent increases NOT demolishing it. The council knew what they were doing by putting the rules off to the side and voting on a completely different solution for the building when there weren't many people there to comment. Throw out the vote and put it on the agenda again with the right topic of conversation and many more would show up, I'm sure. And what about the stipulations that were put on the building when it was given to the city. I don't think, because of those, that the building can be taken down. Let CLT take over and manage the building and let the tenants stay put. Those businesses put alot of money into there spots within the building. L-A Economic Growth Coucil is running a contest to give money to an entrepreneur to START a business in the city as the city coucil is busy pushing MULTIPLE businesses out of business and out of the city. Some of these businesses may not be able to survive moving because of the out-of-pocket expense that they put in to prepare the rooms for their business to move in. The tenant have done a GREAT job improving many parts of the building with their own money. Give them a break, we can't afford to lose more business to other areas, not even across the bridge to Lewiston.
What I find extremely ironic is that the two councelors that are pushing the HARDEST to close and demolish Great Falls School, own and operate demolition and construction companies. I see that as a TOTAL CONFLICT OF INTEREST. Even more so, it would validate the fact that they are looking to line there own pockets. They shouldn't get a vote as far as I'm concerned. Those that voted to not demolish the building need to stick to there guns and morals. Counselors, keep your hands out of the coffers.

I think with a subject as controversial as this, that the rules should not be set aside. The vote to demolish the building was sneaky and underhanded as to do it when no one was there from the public to speak as it wasn't on the agenda. Therefore the vote should be thrown out and put on the agenda so people can speak. Remember we put people on the board and we may need to vote them off.

I think its a damn shame that this is happening. As a city, we have wasted a lot of money on far more useless projects than this (i.e. - Building festival plaza and replacing the ugly awnings how many times, and at what cost and THAT brings in SO MUCH revenue. LOL. And a city building that is way more than we needed). They are about to displace numerous performance and arts classes, groups that will more than likely be forced to move to other towns. CLT has been there 70 yrs, Camire Dance has been there 11 years, and many others have moved in only recently and haven't even had a chance to make it work. This affects thousands of children and adults that take these classes. Again another loss for the city. I am disgusted at our city council for doing this. They are not willing to do anything for this but sit on there butts and criticize the tenants. You, as a council, should be ashamed and I, for one, will definitely be looking at others to take your places come the next election.

Who wrote this article anyways, were they "high" when they wrote it? "gellin like a felon"? and "Livemore"? Really? Isn't it Livermore? Learn to use spell check. You sound like as much of a moron as the moron the article is written about. What's your name? Budda?
Why is it that the little man is always the one to get threatened with stuff such as tax increases or cut programs. Maybe some of these more well to do people who find and get every little loop hole in thier taxes dig a little deeper and pay taxes at the level that we do. As usual, the old saying applies... "the rich get richer as the poor get poorer" meanwhile my budget gets tighter and harder to pay while businesses and richer people pay less in state and federal taxes due to tax exemptions and rightoffs that aren't available to the average joe. Open those rich wallets and help out. After all, this money does eventually tricket down to the cities. I pay well over my fair share of taxes and I still suffer the cuts. When is enough, enough. Welcome to taxation land.
Do you have the land or the money to buy the land and donate it? I don't believe the $60million includes the cost of new land. And the existing school can't sufficiently work for anything let alone a school at this point. Go check it out before you speak and remember accreditation is at stake for the kids going into the high school.
