Wonderful project....

It's so nice to see LSJ publish a positive human interest story. They do a great job with this and it helps to balance all the negative in our world. This Community Luncheon idea has bloomed into a great flower garden and we look forward to working with the residents of Otisfield in future projects of this nature. Thank you Elaine for your faithfulness to this missional project.

Pretty strong opinion Ed....

addiction is a real issue...especially Nicotine. When I quit in 2001 I don't think I could have done it if my peers around me thought I was a "disgusting inconsiderate jerk". I thank God they accepted me for who I was and for what I wanted to become....

I lost my son...

not to a car accident but as a result of alcohol and a tragic flash decision. Nothing will ever kill the pain and to create such a display on a school yard may be graphic but does not really have a lasting impression on people who aren't really affected - only the pain of the loss of a child, sibling, best friend, etc does! The others just move on in life - very quickly i might add. I agree with Colleen...

I agree...

with Ronald R....this is another reason we need a nationalized healthcare plan in which all American citizens would fall under - including members of Congress and State governments.
To radically cut the MaineCare program as suggested will send those people swarming into ER's where they cannot be refused care and where they can't pay the high cost so it will end up in debt collection. The hospitals will be forced to raise their costs to help off-set their loss (called cost-shifting), and insurance premiums will be raised and deductibles increased because they can't keep up with rising costs. It's a never ending circle of our current healthcare dilemma.

We are a state with increasing aged population and low income, unskilled labor force. We have to face this head on - as many rural states are finding. Many of our kids who have gone to college can't find employment in this state and have had to move "away" so the hopes pinned on them have not come to fruition. Mark E. is correct in that someone has to jump into the pool.

Posture

Just looking at the picture itself says a lot...Mr. Kurtz sitting back, legs crossed, head tilted back with arms folded across his chest reveals someone who is not willing or able to listen. It's not just the words that are said (or the tone in which they are voiced) but body language can quickly change the atmosphere as well.

Seems to me that all need to take a breath and evaluate what is 'really' going on here.

Christmas...

Hurray for Turner Board of Selectman. The holiday is Christmas so why would we stray from it's name if that is what we are celebrating! The same with Hannukah or Kwanza - do you see those folks watering down the importance of their celebration? "No" Perhaps if we stopped worrying about what was 'politically correct' and spent more time on what is 'morally correct' we might get a few things right in this world. And shame on you 'Christians' for allowing one of your most important events of the year to be watered down to "Happy Holidays" when you should be rejoicing that "Christ is born!" HE is the reason for the holiday remember...

Same Day Voting

Of course Gov. LePage wants us to vote no on #1, as do many of the Republican's who have inundated my message machine with their taped messages these past few days. It's funny, I have lived in this state all my life and don't know of a single concern that has arisen regarding same day registration. Substitute one addiction for another...

this is so true... the only true way to handle an addiction is to first admit and accept you have it, then make a decision to stop...there are plenty of programs in place to help people stop - IF a person truly desires to stop! I'm tired of my tax dollars paying for these people to go in and out of detox and rehab like a freaking revolving door and sustaining their addiction by adding another substance which they then become dependent on. Well here it is again....in the news!

Will we EVER be rid of this issue! Given that the owner did not live up to his contrac(s) with the town, including taxes, why shouldn't Norway be able to take it by imminent domain? If Barry Mazzaglia wanted the building he should have not only made the repairs to protect the building but made it safe so retailers, or something that might help the local economy, could go back into it. This has become the most costliest situation - a weight around the necks of the townspeople. The Town of Norway sold it - apparently because they could not afford to keep it open and maintained - or because they no longer wanted it. Why NOW?
Time to be rid of it - demolish the thing and start over! Sometimes things are supposed to fall apart so a new thing can be born!!!

Christmas is almost here....

In response to your letter I have a few suggestions...
1) One has a 'choice' in regards to the trappings of the commercialism of this wonderful and sacred day - "Just say no!" About 5-6 years ago our family decided not to get into the whole big gift giving thing. Not to say we don't give a few gifts but they are small to suit the personality or practical to suit the need. Pictures and home baked goods make wonderful personal gifts; giving of our love and time throughout the year is also a wonderful gift. Essentially, we just gather as family, talk and laugh, and eat...each family brings their favorite holiday foods and we do what God desires - "love one another as I have loved you".
2) Remember that Christmas is the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. People who have not accepted this fact (on a personal level in their hearts) really have no business celebrating Christmas - "HE is the reason for the season!" If you're missing this important aspect of Christmas it's no wonder your life is chaos and confusion!
3) Finally, there is no "picture perfect Christmas". The very first Christmas was about as messy and full of anxiety as a real life situation can be. Read the story!!! Especially from the Gospel of Matthew...we wouldn't even be celebrating Christmas if Joseph had not had the compassion of God in his heart for Mary or the deep faith in his God - those two things are at the heart of the very first Christmas. And we can't look at the manger without seeing the shadow of the cross....

To all of you who are frantically running around last minute shopping and pulling your hair out to "get it all done," have fun! My Lord got it all done over 2000 years ago; all I 'have to do' is bask in his grace and mercy and love and listen to 'Silent Night' playing softly in the background on Christmas Eve...

They should be penalized NOT with a slap on the wrist BUT with having to do perpetual care at this cemetery until they are 18 years of age....they should have to help dig the graves for any new burials and fill them in; rake and mow and upright the stones they toppled - pay to have them repaired if necessary; and be in charge of the flags for Memorial & Veterans Day - and what ever else the sexton requires them to do.
Perhaps then they will develop some respect for the dead! and maybe even for themselves...

Genisek2004's picture
verified

Jo, I agree...

something is terribly wrong with this picture. It begins with the fact there really is 'no justice' in this country, nor freedom and equality. Our Senators and Representatives, Congressional leaders, etc. have forgotten the taxpayers who they are to be working for. It's big business and refugee's first; all the while they suck the middleclass dry until we drop into the poverty line ourselves.

Genisek2004's picture
verified

No easy solution...

but reduction in staff morale has proven to reduce quality of care. Hands on staff not happy - patients not happy! It always seems that it is the hands on staff who lose pay and benefits - and at the same time asked to work harder. To make it even worse, while you work harder and give up your breaks and mealtimes to care for the ever increasing work load, you're denied hospital coffee, juice, and peanut butter & crackers on your unit because we're spending too much in dietary budget. It's become absolutely ridiculous! I have 30 years of nursing under my belt and no longer practice. Why? For reasons stated in the article and in my post...

When I worked in management at a hospital, I rarely saw the top level officials have to squeeze much from themselves - or at least never shared that with the staff or public so as to make everyone see we all suffered. I know that the Nurse Managers at Bridgton & Rumford don't just sit around desks all day - they also cover shifts in their units and step in to cover administratively over the weekends and holidays (at least they did a few years ago). So for the person who made remarks about getting rid of them, that would be a bad idea for the staff and patients. For the staff who think they need a union - what happens every time one presents a proposal? - administration responds with throwing money and promises at you to keep the union out!

I agree with the person who stated that it was odd that CMMC is involved in new construction but staff are suffering from wage freezes and reduction in benefits. How many 'new' ER's will CMMC need before they get it right? The recession is not new...perhaps this was a plan that should have been placed on hold for a few more years.

Yes, the government needs to be held accountable to pay it's bills to the hospital - this is a problem long standing - not just because of the recession. What really needs to happen is for healthcare reform within the Maine Care system - like a triage system where patients must call in and be assessed for need for emergency room care. There is terrible abuse of ER use by Maine Care patients - because they have no personal accountability and they really have no where else to go. The doctor offices send them to the ER because they are too busy to see them. We really need more Nurse Practitioner's and Physician Assistants placed in physician practices and clinics (oops, that's right, we don't have free standing clinics around here) where these non-emergent patients can be seen, treated and referred as appropriate.

Let's face it... there is no easy solution, or so it seems!!

Windmills are all over the

Windmills are all over the landscape in Pennsylvania and you hardly notice them. I am told by people down there that they really aren't that noisy. I think we should be using more wind and solar power as a source of energy in this country. Yes, we will still rely upon oil, natural gas, and coal (while it exists) but we have to be more proactive with alternative energy sources. I'm not sure why people are so opposed. Why was a little girl left

Why was a little girl left alone with three grown men? Good question...something doesn't add up alright! As far as I'm concerned the mother hold some responsibility in this situation as well.

We need to be sure and

We need to be sure and really evaluate the TABOR issue. One of my neighbors moved here from Colorodo. He was there when it was voted in and also when it was repealed. It sounds all well and good on the surface but big issues lie underneath.

As for No. #1 - I think it is a shame that people are so opposed to this issue and yet they do nothing to reduce divorce or single parent families...why not propose a bill to require a year separation with required mediation (not about divorce settlements). Perhpas more families would stay together. We make it too easy to divorce without getting to the root causes. For that matter, we make it too easy to get married.

There have been concerns for quite some time in regards to ethical conduct in this department. Unfortunately, I think most of them are talked about but no formal complaints made, or they quietly disappear!

Too bad they didn't support

Too bad they didn't support their Catholic church with that money. Maybe they could keep their churches open! Perhaps they should supported their parishioners with "Love as you would like to be loved." Perhaps that money should have been directed towards fighting the high divorce rate between heterosexual couples...I recently read the local divorces granted and most of those granted (80%) had been married less than 5 years.

Comment to KoNPHL1C7 -

Comment to KoNPHL1C7 - Shouldn't we make alcohol illegal as well? By "making it legal we are telling our kids there's nothing wrong with it, which is a complete lie!" And shouldn't we add cigarettes to this illegal list also? Has making things illegal kept our youth away from harmful substances? No... I don't have the right answer here but it seems like our government and public opinions operate on a lot of double standards.

Wonderful project for young

Wonderful project for young people to be involved in and speak out against. Perhaps our youngsters will help pave the way to educate and model healthy realtionships and restore our faith in traditional marriage.

I am against the "soda tax"

I am against the "soda tax" - as the title of the article indicates "if only it were that simple". Placing more tax on the backs of poor people is not the answer. To start with, one can purchase soda for $1 for a 2 liter bottle. A 100% fruit juice costs between $3-4. Milk costs almost $4 gallon. I understand why low income families might have to choose between healthy and unhealthy beverages. As for the fight to reduce obesity we need to start targeting the real reasons that obesity is a problem in our country. I disagree with fixitoo1. We are all paying a huge price for those people who believe "each person is given the right to live his life at his choice free to do with it as he/she feels fit so long as it does not infringe on others". Obesity leads to many chronic health conditions, as does smoking and substance abuse. As a healthcare worker I take care of patients who ascribe to your kind of thinking. The huge costs that are incured because of repeat admissions and noncompliance to recommended treatment are absorbed by those who have private insurance, driving up health insurance premiums every year with higher deductibles and reduced coverage for what we are paying for. Their "choices" do infringe on others".

I'm ready to try public option healthcare! My group premiums are going up again this year, the benefits decreasing and my co-pay increased.

I'm questioning why it took

I'm questioning why it took the mother 1 1/2 months to report this crime...irregardless, rape is rape but he will probably get off because there will be no physical evidence.

The speed limit is 25 miles

The speed limit is 25 miles per hour through that section of town. The road is a 2 lane road, fairly wide for center of town. My first instinct is inattention at the wheel...or medical. If it were ETOH he would have been arrested at scene I would think.

Melaynasmom must have some

Melaynasmom must have some inside info the police investigators and DA don't to justify making such a comment. I believe Samson's attorney clearly showed many holes in the investigation and if I were on the jury I could not rule definitively for the prosecution. If Samson did it he will face judgment eventually - but if he didn't a great injustice has been done to him and his family that will have lasting consequences. No apology from the DA or others involved can erase this. I feel empathy for both families and I hope that the Libby family and friends will eventually find justice and peace for this tragic loss.

Concerned Community Member -

Concerned Community Member - I personally would love to see a REAL overhaul of our healthcare system and current health insurance plans/companies. I believe we should have a general minimum policy for every citizen to guarantee health coverage. But I also believe that people who know what they are doing should write the standards and policy regulations. We cannot continue down the road we are on. As a healthcare worker I see lots of misuse, abuse, and mishandling of the current system/practices. I wonder why it is that a Refugee gets better coverage and access than our working poor? I wonder just how poor does one working individual have to be to qualify for assistance? I wonder why...about many things. But I don't hear my questions answered in the new healthcare proposals in Maine or the Federal gov't.

Bottom line, a woman died and a young kid was at the wheel. Could he have not known he hit her? I guess it's possible. But for her not to have been found during the investigation seems a bit absurd!

Concerned Community Member -

Concerned Community Member - We definitely need to rethink healthcare but I do not see age alone as a deciding factor. I have seen young people - ages 30-50 - chew up a lot of healthcare resources and dollars who have so many risk factors, one of which is noncompliance to their prescribed treatment plans, and yet we keep readmitting them and spending thousands to get them well enough to go home only to see them back repeatedly. Limits and enforcable guidelines are what we need on healthcare! At least that's my opinion...
