My condolences...

Sandra and Sherry-
I played sports at Telstar with you both. So sorry to hear about your Mom's passing; I lost my mother, too. Again, my condolences.

SO sorry...

My computer's been freezing lately. Did NOT mean to triple post, and I guess you can't edit stuff out, even if no one has responded yet? Hmmmmmm- that shoud be a feature for us folks who have slower, older computers. Again, SORRY, folks!

The MAJORITY of voters.....

...did indeed say NO!! He only won 38% of the vote, Now, simple math> 62% did NOT want him!! I think we should adopt measures as a lot of other states have. If no one gets a majority (50%+), then they have a run-off election between the top 2 vote getters.

Thanks for understanding, angelsx34eva!

I totally agree with you! I WASN'T dissing salemgirl- I just want people to understand that not ALL of us are slackers and cheats.

And why DON'T we have some kind of workfare in Maine? If I was physically able, I would have NO problem doing that. People don't realize how bad it feels to have to take help- but, I DID work very hard my whole life, and people tell me that's what it's for> people who TRULY need it. As for the card? I think a lot of people in Maine know what it looks like- I still HATE when people look at what I'm buying, and shake their heads. It HURTS. I mean, yogurt is a luxury? I feel fortunate that I can buy healthy fruits and veggies. But, got a feeling that next year, we're ALL gonna get cut back drastically. They just gave us a 3 month extension, AFTER we were all sent letters, and I was gonna get my benefits cut by 2/3!! I don't know how I can feed myself on $45/month. Time for a diet, I guess. lol I won't be able to buy fresh fruits & veggies, and that will hurt. Oh, well, what are you gonna do?

Thanks again for your thoughtful letter- nice to know SOME people can understand.

Knowing the Wilton/Farmington area....

...I have faith that the good-hearted people of that area will be sure to extend some Christmas cheer to these "stranded" truckers!

I just knew...

...that someone would voice the opinion of many.
I worked HARD all my life, starting in High School. I'm also a Vietnam-era vet, and I just wish people wouldn't JUDGE all people by the nefariuos actions of the "cheaters". Yes, I know many people that are on welfare/food stamps/Section 8 who ARE able to work, but "play" the system, because they can. Believe me, I actually MISS being able to work; I miss the fulfillment of doing a hard days work, and I miss the comraderie with fellow co-workers. But, sometimes things happen that are beyond your control. I ABHORRED the idea of getting disability, but I couldn't find any work that I could do with my conditions. Believe me, I would LOVE to be working again, and contributing to society. I am SO ashamed to have to use my food card when I shop, but, otherwise? I couldn't eat healthy foods.

So, before you put all of us in one category, realize that there are a LOT of legitimate people who could not survive w/out help. I REFUSE to do Section 8, even tho I'm sure I would qualify. I live very simply, don't get out much, try to keep what "health" I have left by eating a good diet of fruits, veggies, etc and trying to keep in shape, despite having TWO knees that are "bone on bone", and can barely walk. I volunteer locally and do what I can to help others (especially families) that are having a tougher time than me.

So, as the song says "Walk a Mile in my Shoes" (wish I COULD still walk a mile!l lol) before you lump everyone as slackers and cheaters. I'm NOT dissing you, salemgirl- just want to educate you to the fact that there ARE some of us who couldn't survive w/out help. Believe me, if/when I get better, I'll be out beating the pavement, like so many hundreds who are able bodied and looking for work. So, no offense, OK? Just wanted to show another side. Thanks for listening (well, reading!) lol

Not to say "I told you so"...

....but I remarked back on December 1st that this woman should also be held accountable. This whole story is such a tragedy on so many levels, but, as I said earlier, 2 wrongs don't make a right. I especially feel sorry for her children, who are the secondary victims now in this whole mess.

My favorite quote...

...is from my father, a Mainah from Down East.
"Moxie tastes like axle grease smells." lol
Don't get me wrong- I LOVE the stuff, and always make the Moxie Festival! Other than lobster, what represents Maine so well?

What has happened to "la femme" in the middle of this mess?

Sounds like a "murder for hire" case if I ever heard one. I may have missed it, but not much attention has been given to her role in this. As a victim of domestic violence myself, I can definitely relate to this young lady's plight. But 2 wrongs don't make a right...

What I see is the biggest problem...

...has been the "No Child Left Behind" program. I have several friends that are teachers, and they've told me they HAVE to "teach the test", or their school/district lose Federal moneys. There's GOT to be a better solution; I just hope and pray that we can come up with a better way to WHY we spend MORE than most nations per pupil, yet our test scores are still tanking.

I say leave it up to the educators; yes, there are a few bad teachers, but most of them really DO want to make a difference. Why else would they work for a pittance? I remember teachers that really CARED, and tried to help the underachievers. I totally understand that a lot of kids now have horrific home lives; it was so rare in my days. (50's-60's) But with all the distractions children have now (TV, cell phones, computer in their rooms), that they can easily not buckle down. It always comes back to the parents- if you love your children, you HAVE to try every way you can to keep them engaged. And, it's a bonus, too, because I have learned with MY children, that I have also learned a lot when I help them with their homework! lol

There just has to be a better way- I wish I knew the solution.

How sad...

that grown adults (and, sure, they're gonna say it's for their kids ;) ) stand in line, even call in "sick", so they can get a violent, insidious video game in these times.(And, yes, I admit, it's at least a step above "Grand Theft Auto").

Do you realize there are people worldwide that have to stand in line for hours for potable WATER? Especially in hard-hit areas where natural disasters have occurred, where they have no food or proper sanitation?

Not to sound preachy- after all, we still are a capitalist society- but maybe every now and then, one needs to stand back and take stock of what is REALLY important in life.
Through several recent tragedies in mine, which we all have, I have a different perspective now on the important things. Mostly, spend your time with family, friends, neighbors, and you'd be amazed how good it is to help others, and let them help you.

Just sayin'...

Well said!!

You hit the nail on the head, Barbara. I would LOVE to hear other ideas how to fix Maine's broken economy, Oxford county in particular.

In Forbe's recent list of "Best state for business", guess where we placed? You guessed it>50th!! Now until we can figure out ways to create new jobs that people actually WANT to work in, I say let's at least give this a try. I was always against any casinos before, but we're hurting big time, folks. Is this gonna cost state or local moneys? I've tried to keep up with this issue, and I don't seem to remember that this will cost us, the taxpayers. If I missed something, then I'm sure I will be corrected.

Sometimes you just have to try new things. We lost most of our mills, our shoe shops, and lots of other GOOD jobs overseas. Well, much as I am against gambling, there are LOTS of Mainers who enjoy it, and travel to Bangor, or, for the serious ones, Connecticut...why not keep that money here? I may be naive, so be it. I just know there are WAY too many people around here that would LOVE to have a job there (or anywhere, for that matter). I have several friends that have been laid off for a long time, and they don't know how they're gonna pay their bills if they can't get SOME kind of work.

Think of them, and hold your nose as you vote for the lesser of 2 evils- I am.

Not to be picky...

...but, actually, there is a restaurant (The River Restaurant) and cabins in proximity of Snow Falls.

But, I totally agree with you on the facts> BY FAR, pedophiles are heterosexual males.

Yes, what you say is true.

Yes, what you say is true.  But it seems to be the same attitude about the deficit, the debt, and the destruction worldwide of our climate.  Do you not have grandchildren, and expect THEM to have kids?  We may be "dust in the wind" by then, but is this the legacy we want to leave them?  I'm just hoping I keep getting SS before it goes bust- but what will our children have?  I know that SS wasn't intended to be one's only income- but with so many unemployed/underemployed, what will they have in their "golden years"?  Hard to build up one's own private retirement plan if you can barely make it week to week.  Just sayin'...

I have a hollow feeling in

I have a hollow feeling in my gut- the same feeling I had when OJ got acquitted.

The investigators (on ALL levels) seemed to have dropped the ball on this one. They SHOULD have at least investigated more leads, if only to eliminate others.

I knew yesterday when the jury asked to review evidence, that he was gonna go scott free. It's hard, when you've been on a jury, to make that decision to declare someone guilty, especially if you've got a few other jurors already convinced of the "not guilty" verdict. They sway you, and that "reasonable doubt" is very far-reaching.

I don't know the truth- I wasn't there that night. But, other cases have been decided in this state with FAR less "circumstantial" evidence. I find it hard to believe that anyone else could have been clever enough to "plant" all that evidence pointing Samson's way.

My thoughts and prayers go to Scott's family tonight, as they have been all along. If this is a wrong decison by mortal beings, then I find solace that the final Judge will make it right.

RIP, Scott.

First, let me state that I

First, let me state that I am SO not for this kind of retribution.
THAT being said? I have also followed baseball for decades- and sometimes? You just gotta do what you just gotta do. That's how the game has been played for years, for right or for wrong.
I watch EVERY RS game, and Kevin has showed good patience all the other times he's been "drilled" this season. Granted, some unintentional, some VERY intentional!
OK, I don't know if this kid Pocello did it intentionally or not. Just looked kinda hinky since he had previously gone after another of our good hitters, Victor Martinez. He just kinda gave him the "WTF" look- WHY would he try to hit him? Early in the game, low score.
I know there was history, and that Tazawa had hit their star, Cabreara(UNINTENTIONALLY, IMHO), because Cab turned INTO the pitch, like a checked swing, instead of the natural reflex of turning away.
NOT a pretty part of my fave sport, but, it happens.
As long as no one was "head-hunting"(ie Chamberlain), then, let the guys sort it out.
I HATE the brawls, but, a part of me thinks MLB must LOVE it for the ratings.
Just like the slow-leaking of "The List".
Take your licks, take the punishment, then PLAY BALL!

SCORE ONE for us little

SCORE ONE for us little people!
The whole argument was moot, to me, when I found out that the USPS already came there daily to pick up the TOWN'S official mail.
Glad that calmer, more sensible minds prevailed.

And, still again, the Repubs

And, still again, the Repubs are showing thier own lack of ANY new ideas to help "FIX" this country's woes.
Stimulus? NO!!
Cash for Clunkers? NO!!
Now, trying to fix this MESS of a cohesive, doable Health Care System?
NO new ideas- just the same party of "NO"
When the TRUE Republican leaders can get their collective minds together(and, there ARE a lot of really GOOD Repub leaders!), STOP letting the Dittoheads and O'Reilly followers
outshout them at every turn?...
Well, then, maybe we can get this GREAT country of the USA back on track, and FIX this mess we're in!
Granted, it's now a worldwide catastrophe, but> are we NOT the country that could always come together for the common good? I still like to think that we are FAIRER, SMARTER, and more in love with this young (225 yrs+) experiment in democracy, and we will all pull together in the end!
Instead of this showboating, let's get down to a CIVILIZED discourse of how the heck we can bring this country back to the leadership role we have enjoyed over the past several decades.
WE ARE ALL AMERICANS!
As a proud Vietnam-era vet, I will ALWAYS know in my heart that this is BY FAR the best country in the world!
OK- off my soapbox now. Let's have an intelligent, civilized discourse, shall we?
