I believe the public would have been better served if they didn't chase a drunk driver at 100 mph across 3 towns. They already had his license number and description. Sure he may have gotten into an accident anyway but they increased the odds considerably by chasing him.
The posted list was how it was given to the press. I believe the Sec of State received one with the full names. IMO voting shouldn't be a last minute thing. If you want to vote you shouldn't complain about having to register before hand.
"As has been demonstrated time after time, no one abuses the system more than republicans,"
Can you back this statement up or is this just inflammatory rhetoric? Maybe there's a tally sheet somewhere. Please post it so we can see the current score.
Actually there are 5 Democrats and 5 Republicans on the committee counting both the House and Senate representatives. Appears to be fairly bipartisan to me.
6. At large. "At large" means off the premises of the owner and not under the control of any person whose personal presence and attention would reasonably control the conduct of the animal.
[ 1987, c. 383, §3 (NEW) .]
Every immigrant group at first sets up their own communities. There's French, Irish, Jewish and Asian neighborhoods in most large cities. The Somali culture is very different than ours so it is more obvious.
If we want to help we need to put a little more thought into who were are electing than we usually do. In each election we just rubber stamp the incumbents or a particular party. We need to put some thought into it.
I've already responded to Brian regarding the "scumbag" comment. He used it in a response to me and I didn't realize I needed research his responses.
In any case, there is plenty of racism when it comes to the attutudes toward Somalis, but not everyone, or even most, that complain are racist. Conversely plenty of those that like to throw the term around, use it to shut off debate, or use it to justify their situation, are themselves racist. Every large immigrant population has gone through the same assimilation phases and race wasn't then, and shouldn't be, the issue.
To act like there isn't problem isn't addressing it and isn't validating that others may have legimate points.
For what it is worth. I don't care that the Somalis, or any other legal immigrant population, have come to our area. My gripe is with the system and the Federal Government for putting this in our lap and expecting everyone to think it is great.
Your first sentence is very telling, in my opinion. You are assuming the reason people are complaining is because of race. Why? Maybe you should look in the mirror to discover the answer. You are blindly dismissing comments because you are focusing on one thing rather than the actual problem, and there is a problem.
Who's actually the racist in this hypothetical situation? The person who makes a comment, and never mentions race. Or the person who states that the comment was only made because the people they are commenting on are black.
It is unfair to label everyone that complains about their taxes going up, or the quality of the education in their schools going to down, a racist. The same compaints were made when the Irish and French came to Lewiston and the complaints, while the same, had nothing to do with race. Your "the scumbag white folK" comment shows racism on your part.
As long as our welfare system is available to be abused then there will be those that will, no matter what color, religion or ethnic group. Except the Irish. LOL ( that was a joke).
Brian, I disagree that no one has complained about Maine's easy welfare system prior to the Somalis coming. Many have been complaining for years, long before the current situation. The problem isn't that they come, in my opinion, the problem is that the Federal Government allows easy immigration for some groups but doesn't provide the local funds to acclimate them to our society. It is not fair for a local economy to bear this burden alone.
The welfare system should be revamped so that it is not a way of life but just a short term solution.
I don't have a problem with the Casino. I do have a problem with how referendums are run. What is this the 5-6 time a casino question has been on the ballot. I guess their plan is working. Keep bringing it up until it gets a yes vote.
Now here you get words of wisdom from the big tough guy hiding behind the key board. I guess you can't expect any more from someone who's mother is also his aunt.
If this were the only business that ever stated that Maine was a hard to state to do business in, then Rep Hinck would be more believeable. However, you would be hard pressed to find a business that didn't think that way.
The major thing that Maine's legislation has ever done to "protect Maine" is to make it so unfriendly towards business that none of them want to relocate here. Maine didn't do didily to protect the environment until the EPA came along and forced them. So the legislature can't take the bows now.
Poland Spring is intelligent enough to know that a 1/2 cent turns into 3 cents whenever the legislation has a shortfall.
I don't believe that most Mainer's favor wind power. The only reason they are being put up are the huge incentives that are paid the investors. It's just a feel good (for the bureaucrats) issue. They produce very little power and spoil the landscape.
“I have serious concerns about unelected government officials at the EPA taking on this complicated issue instead of Congress"
Are you kidding me. I have serious concerns about ELECTED officials, with no experience in environmental matters, having any control over this. This should not be a political issue it should be based upon what's good for Maine's/USA's people and the environment. Not how much some lobbyist can sent your way.
maineiac, Try raising a couple of million chickens and see how much kindness you give them. Quality Egg is no different from any of the others and not everyone wants these things hanging around. I plan on eating eggs, chicken, beef etc. Let the tree huggers eat the trees.
I guess the game plan is to wear the voters down with a casino vote every 2-4 years. Same plan different location. Not crazy about the idea but I'll wait and see what develops.
The article reminded me of pork barrel politics. They are trying to give everyone something.
I disagree with the sheriff's deputy in this case. If you want to call it bashing go ahead. Just keep that in mind the next time you disagree with someone.
They knew who he was, how to reach him and what he was wanted for. This didn't call for a high speed chase down a busy route in mid afternoon IMO.
I don't believe there is anyone writing here that is suggesting they should let him go. They should have waited for another time. This wasn't some spur of the moment chase. They had time to set up spike mats so it had to have lasted a while. Long enough for clear heads to take over.
Not a Tron fan but this time I agree with him. The deputies should have backed off when the speeds became accessive and waited for another day to catch their felon. Nothing good was going to come of a high speed chase on Route 202 in mid afternoon.
"Rather than taking the easy way out, be forward thinking."
Like many "mandates" they look good on paper but are unatainable in reality. Most of the magnetic metals are recycled regardless of whether we put them in a separate container or in regular trash.
In my opinion it is a good idea to see how much the citizens care about recycling. Personally I already bring it to the collection center and I agree it is a pain. But if we are serious about it then we should all do are part. It is time we started thinking about ways to help out instead of always asking for help.
"Costellos were big law and order people?" lol Call out the posse, scavenger on Fern Street.
I agree reducing the amount of trash that needs to be processed is more beneficial to the city than the value of the trash. If they need another truck with men to collect metal just processing it isn't worth what the can get. It's going to be mixed metals which is sold as iron, or whatever the least valuable metal is in the mix.
You mean they call it Clean Up week? I thought it was Redistribution Week. Sorry Auburn, if some "junky" wants my two copper pipes and my old chair, he can have it.
"Many people blame the current Obama administration for all the problems in this country"
I don't blame the Obama administration for all the problems in this country but I do blame him for being a single issue president for the first 15 months of his presidency. I also blame him for trying to ram the health care bill down our throats. From the beginning the process has been shady and now it's just getting ridiculous.
"Imagine our shame should Maine someday be identified as the source of guns used in such an attack"
Are you kidding me? The only shame I can see is if we let someone from Mass tell us how to run our State. Let Mass clean up their own act and we'll worry about ourselves without your help or input.
What's strange Tron is that the SJ never said anything bad about the French but you chose to imply that they did. The editorial was about picking a different day for the festival.
What is the writer saying, Maine shouldn't have a State biologist? Maine waste money on a lot of things but having one biologist on board isn't one of them.
It's pretty simple really. The trout are supposed to be in the pond and the bass aren't. Are you saying Maine should only correct biological problems that are easily seen? Out of sight out of mind I guess.
Now since Maine takes the hunting and fishing license fees for the general fund there's no way to tell if license fees pay for these situations, but anyone that wants to fish in Maine dishes out $20.00 +/- for the right to do so. Not going to look it up but if there are 200,000 fishing licenses sold that's $8 million.
Actually you're incorrect in stating that the plan is solidly popular. According to your guys at CNN only 30% would like to see the current health care bill passed. Sure you can pick out sections that are popular but unfortunately bills are not passed in sections. It's either all or nothing.
Eventually they should redesign public bathrooms to be open to both sexes. Individual stalls etc. Should have done this a long time ago. It is a ridiculous waste of space, and probably money, to separate them. The only problem is guys would have to start waiting in lines.
At least this one has a happy ending. XYZ you are a moron. First off, I doubt there will be a bill in this situation and secondly, if their is, the parents would be happy to pay it, for a living son.
"Unbelieveable that anyone would speak up for these people and say they are motivated by anything other than GREED!"
Sammy that statement could be made about anyone that starts a new business that makes money. The purpose of any investment is to make more than you put in. If that's your definition of greed then so be it. What the US needs right now is more greedy people to get the economy back on track. I don't gamble at all, but I know people that think it's fun and consider it just entertainment. Sure there are some that become addicted. If we banned everything that some people could get addicted to then this would be a pretty boring country.
"mc - ever notice how the city has made Lincoln street wider, more of a boulevard effct?"
Thinkingman, before you start calling people dumb you may want to get your measuring tape out. Lincoln street is no wider than is has ever been. Just the building are gone and it "looks" wider.
So now the two senators from Maine, who vote with the Democratic party 90% of the time are "bought and paid for" because they didn't this time. Your letter was a joke SSDD. Unless the parties work together then nothing will get done. The dems have been trying for the past year and not one bill has been passed yet. Hmmm, going it alone is working just great.
Here's a news flash for you. Why don't you get off your butt and close the "wealth gap" yourself. I know it's against your nature to do for yourself but it is much more rewarding than bringing everyone else down to your level.
I guess Tron it's all in your prospective. Yes Republicans rightly say no to trillion dollar budgets, pork barrel health care bills and more government handouts. Extremes in either party are always going to get most of the press and be the most vociferous. Personally I consider anyone an extremist that cannot see problems created by their own group(party). As for Sarah Palin. The press makes her what she is. I've been a republican all my life and I can tell she should never be voted into a national office and probably will never even run. She certainly gets the Dems panties in a wad though.
"The Brown victory reflects Coakley's inability to campaign." I hope the Dem's keep thinking that way Lil. It should be a republican landslide next fall if they do.
Most ski accidents happen because the skier is skiing on terrain that they don't have the skills for or are simply skiing too fast and out of control. Stating that an accident happened at such and such a spot on a trail and hinting that the location was the problem is ridiculous. If it worked, it would just push more skiers on to the already crowded other slopes, which is the other big factor and accidents.
Gays can be proud but comparing being gay to being black, a women or catholic is just ridiculous. And to all you "holier than thous" out there that think the people voted against question one because they are bigots just don't get it and probably never will.
John, maybe you missed the part where she says "I am continually told the country is broke". I don't believe she ever stated the Maine was paying them. It was just a question Ed and the sarcasm wasn't necessary in my opinion.
I don't believe many that signed up for the National Guard expected to spend a year away from their families, friends and work.
Evidently if you disagree with Ed your just following the "herd". I would assume if you agreed with him you would be a person that thinks on their own. Didn't President Obama say the same thing about republicans vs. democrats recently? Ed you really should try to think on your own. It looks like your just following a different herd.
We all don't have the same dream as you. My dream is that the gay/lesbian community will jump off the marriage band wagon and fight for stronger civil union laws across the country. Marriage for many of us is a religious ceremony and the line we will not cross.
What I don't get is why the g/l community fights so hard for a marriage law when a civil-union law would do exactly the same thing and would be endorsed by a majority of Maine's citizens.
It's this in-your-face attitude that exacerbates the problem in my opinion.
You can cry all you want that everyone that voted yes is a homophobe but then you would be overlooking the fundamental differences the two sides have, and those differences have nothing to do with being anti-gay.
Yeah, just like they do now with Maine Care. Speaking of Medicare and Medicaid do you actually believe those two are run efficiently, without waste and fraud?
Well Steve, I am 60 years old and have worked all my life. The last time I visited the emergency room for myself was when I played hockey about 20 years ago. This guy has visited twice recently. The emergency rooms are used too often for non-emergencies and are driving costs way up. It's easy to blame insurance companies but there's no proof that they are to blame. Also I think Richard is a man's name.
First off the health care bill is an insurance bill not a hospital cost bill. Second, either you don't know what the cost was in Holland or you neglected to say. There's nothing to indicate, in your letter, that the cost was any less. Lastly you should try and be a little more careful. Someone as accident prone as you should have their own physician on stand by. At the very least you should be grateful you've a place to go when you have one of your mishaps instead of complaining. You're why health costs are so high in the first place.
I agree, when you walk you can pick those places that will get you the most positive feedback. You don't know who will show up at a town hall meeting. Heaven forbid that someone who disagrees with you does.
What a disgusting letter! Ms. Caron you're a hateful person and somebody I know I wouldn't like. My children have done things I haven't liked but I was never ashamed to introduce them to people, the public. I am proud of my children as is Ms. Palin of her's. Being in public doesn't give the media a free ticket to crudeness.
"A son who is dragging her down"!! Who the heck are you to judge.
I don't see how you could have missed the word "special" in your first sentence Paul. I am not saying that the F & W Dept did everything correct in handing out permits for this special hunt but it has nothing to do with the regular moose hunt and doesn't effect your odds of winning a permit. It doesn't cut down on the number of permits issued and your accumulated points are used in the regular lottery. But then again I like your last sentence because that does increase my odds.
MrT, I am not defensive I just get sick of all the misinformation out there regarding snakes and the sensationalized stories about them. Burmese pythons do get 14 feet. Boa constrictors don't. They are two separate species. It's like saying I was biten by a 100 lb chihuahua and proving it by saying Great Danes get 100 lbs.
As for the size of a boa constrictor:
"Since this topic is frequently discussed and there is a great amount of confusion regarding the potential size of Boa constrictors, we decided to dedicate a separate page to this topic.
Horror stories about boas of 14 ft in length (or even more) are often scaring people who are considering the purchase of a Boa constrictor.
First off, we have yet to see a boa of such a length. Even if such an animal actually does exist, it would surely be an exceptional case, sort of like a 7 ft tall top score basketball player in the first league.
Unfortunately, many authors of books about boas stick to such record dimensions and mislead the people with these. For instance: It would not make any sense to write a book about the anatomy of human beings in which a height of 7 ft is given for Homo sapiens. However, this is exactly what happens in these books. Most of the authors provide the record length, thereby creating the impression in the reader that this is actually the average size.
OK, what size do they actually reach?
In our experience, even those subspecies of Boa constrictor that are considered to have a significant growth potential rarely reach 10 ft in length.
The largest Boa constrictors are Boa c. constrictor from Peru and Boa c. imperator from Colombia. We would declare the average size of sexually mature females to be 8 ft. (if a reasonable feeding schedule has been applied). http://www.boa-constrictors.com/com/sizeofboas.html
Lead Dog, I am wondering why you make that comment. There's no record anywhere of a boa constrictor killing a human. Yet people are killed by dogs every year.
"From Sept. 1, 1982, until Jan. 1, 2007, there were 2,227 reported attacks causing human bodily harm by dogs kept as family pets (guard dogs, police dogs, and dogs trained to fight were excluded). Of these reported attacks, 267 resulted in death and 1,329 resulted in maiming (i.e., loss of a limb or other permanent disfigurement). Pitbulls, bull mastiffs, and rottweilers were responsible for 73 percent of the total attacks, 66 percent of the deaths, and 72 percent of the maimings. Children and elderly persons were the victims in almost all of the deaths and maimings." http://dogshitdepot.com/?p=13
Although it does happen, very few people are attacked and killed by a non-venomous pet snake. A burmese python is the most common snake involved.
Mr. T - a 14 ft boa is an extreme rarity so why make such a statement as if it is common.
Well the local snake "expert" ought to get his facts straight. Boas don't get 17 ft or even 13 feet. Average is about 8. His 10 footer is a big boa. I doubt the snake is any where near 17 feet anyway. You can probably cut the size in half. Most snakes, including Burmese pythons, become less aggressive the larger they get, not more. Snakes are aggressive out of fear and what does a 15 ft. snake have to fear. It may last until mid-Sept but then it will be too cold to function and eventually will die. With the average temps in the low 60's it will be in direct sun if it ever comes out. Should be easy to find.
Is this a news article or a LTO? The by-line says Cameron Churchill and it is signed by Loren Feldman.
I don't agree with your letter Loren. I don't think a few crack-pots will be able to change history. There's always going to be crack-pots around no matter what generation you're in.

"mc - ever notice how the
"mc - ever notice how the city has made Lincoln street wider, more of a boulevard effct?"
Thinkingman, before you start calling people dumb you may want to get your measuring tape out. Lincoln street is no wider than is has ever been. Just the building are gone and it "looks" wider.
So now the two senators from
So now the two senators from Maine, who vote with the Democratic party 90% of the time are "bought and paid for" because they didn't this time.
Good post Ernest!
I guess Tron it's all in your
I guess Tron it's all in your prospective.
"The Brown victory reflects
"The Brown victory reflects Coakley's inability to campaign." I hope the Dem's keep thinking that way Lil. It should be a republican landslide next fall if they do.

Most ski accidents happen
Most ski accidents happen because the skier is skiing on terrain that they don't have the skills for or are simply skiing too fast and out of control. Stating that an accident happened at such and such a spot on a trail and hinting that the location was the problem is ridiculous. If it worked, it would just push more skiers on to the already crowded other slopes, which is the other big factor and accidents.
Gays can be proud but
Gays can be proud but comparing being gay to being black, a women or catholic is just ridiculous. And to all you "holier than thous" out there that think the people voted against question one because they are bigots just don't get it and probably never will.
John, maybe you missed the
John, maybe you missed the part where she says "I am continually told the country is broke". I don't believe she ever stated the Maine was paying them. It was just a question Ed and the sarcasm wasn't necessary in my opinion.
I don't believe many that signed up for the National Guard expected to spend a year away from their families, friends and work.
Evidently if you disagree
Evidently if you disagree with Ed your just following the "herd". I would assume if you agreed with him you would be a person that thinks on their own. Didn't President Obama say the same thing about republicans vs. democrats recently? Ed you really should try to think on your own. It looks like your just following a different herd.
We all don't have the same
We all don't have the same dream as you.
Yeah, just like they do now
Yeah, just like they do now with Maine Care. Speaking of Medicare and Medicaid do you actually believe those two are run efficiently, without waste and fraud?
So Lil, Evidently your
So Lil, Evidently your position is that the emergency room isn't used too often by persons with non-emergenies. Now why does that not surprise me?
Well Steve, I am 60 years
Well Steve, I am 60 years old and have worked all my life.
First off the health care
First off the health care bill is an insurance bill not a hospital cost bill. Second, either you don't know what the cost was in Holland or you neglected to say. There's nothing to indicate, in your letter, that the cost was any less. Lastly you should try and be a little more careful. Someone as accident prone as you should have their own physician on stand by. At the very least you should be grateful you've a place to go when you have one of your mishaps instead of complaining. You're why health costs are so high in the first place.
I agree, when you walk you
I agree, when you walk you can pick those places that will get you the most positive feedback. You don't know who will show up at a town hall meeting. Heaven forbid that someone who disagrees with you does.
What a disgusting letter!
I don't see how you could
I don't see how you could have missed the word "special" in your first sentence Paul.
Get rid of the whole mess.

MrT, I am not defensive I
MrT, I am not defensive I just get sick of all the misinformation out there regarding snakes and the sensationalized stories about them. Burmese pythons do get 14 feet. Boa constrictors don't. They are two separate species. It's like saying I was biten by a 100 lb chihuahua and proving it by saying Great Danes get 100 lbs.
As for the size of a boa

Lead Dog, I am wondering why
Children and elderly persons were the victims in almost all of the deaths and maimings."

Although it does happen, very few people are attacked and killed by a non-venomous pet snake. A burmese python is the most common snake involved.
Mr. T - a 14 ft boa is an extreme rarity so why make such a statement as if it is common.
Well the local snake
