A sad day. I really think that the opening of the Chick A Dee of Lewiston had a lot to do with the closing. Many of the Chick A Dee's customers in Lewiston/Auburn didn't want to bother with the drive to Turner, and started going to the one in Lewiston. I figured this would happen sooner or later. The Lewiston parking lot is always packed, and when I would drive by the Turner location it was always empty. I have lots of fond memories of going to the Turner restaurant, especially taking my mom there for her birthday or Mother's Day.
Sorry Russ, I didn't mean to make light of it...When riding my bicycle on Sabattus I refuse to ride in the street....I stick to the sidewalk, yeilding to pedestrians of course. I agree that Sabattus is an extremely dangerous street to cross, which is why she should have crossed at a cross walk or an intersection with a controlled traffic light. Jaywalking is not only dangerous, but in some places illegal just for this reason. And I agree with your statement that she "took a chance" doing what she did. I'm just glad that the outcome wasn't worse.

Today is a sad day. Olympia was 1 of 2 Republicans (The other being Susan Collins) that this staunch Democrat has ever voted for. They both do what's right for the state of Maine. Whom ever takes her place has some very big shoes to fill.
"In Lewiston, at least, the mayor's role is very limited. The mayor runs meetings and acts as the ceremonial head of the city.
But he doesn't get a vote or a say in the day-to-day running of the city." This makes me feel a lot better about Bob MacDonald....there will be a lot of bark but no bite.
Brooks must be a real redneck if he doesn't understand what the OIC can sue him for. I think that the governor should be required to come to Clover and tell these folks face to face what his plan is for them if they are forced to leave.
It's great to see stories like this, and the anonymous people who paid off delinquent layaway's at K Mart, and the Santa handing out envelopes with $100 bills in them in Portland...it really restores my faith in people!
"They are taking their patriotism and throwing it away, and they are hurting the middle class. They want to make sure that America is hurting while this president is sitting so they won't vote for him in 2012." I am hoping that it all backfires on the Republicans and they get voted out come next elections....
This is the reason why you should never turn your wheels while you are stopped to take a left turn! Keep your wheels straight while you are waiting for traffic to pass. It could save your life...I remember back in the 1980's there was a fatal accident near this same spot, where the garden center is. There was a van headed northbound and was waiting to turn in there. They had their wheels turned and were rear ended. The crash forced them into an oncoming trailer truck I believe.
I still think that the expansion to Brunswick is a dumb idea. They should have expanded up through Lewiston/Auburn and then up through Augusta and eventually Bangor. But then I bet the Maine Turnpike Authority wouldn't have been very happy with the competition,
It seems to be a trend of violence on Black Fridays, and usually at Wal Mart. I recall reading about the temporary Wal Mart security guard that was trampled to death in 2008, and how when the employees tried to clear the store of shoppers that people refused to leave. By your description of your dads health situation I'd be more scared that I knew and didn't do anything about it. I couldn't live with the fact that I could have prevented him from either killing himself, someone else on the road, or both.
I for one am voting no. I live in Lewiston, and I want the planned casino in Oxford to be a success. I feel that if there is another casino so close it will ruin the chances of either one being successful. So no no no!
I find it really amazing that there are all these accounts of feeling the quake here in Maine and I was at home in Lewiston and never felt a thing.....
I agree about sending all the incumbents packing, including all of the Tea Party members! We saw exactly what the Tea Party and the Republicans agenda was right after the last elections. It wasn't fixing the economy, it wasn't creating jobs. When Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell stated "the most important job for new GOP leadership is to make Obama a one-term president" we knew it was politics as usual. Between their childish efforts to oust the president and their manufactured "crisis" with the debt ceiling I say sent them ALL packing! They aren't trying to help the rest of the country, they're trying to destroy it!
The guy was turned down, where's the fraud??? I can see if the guy had bbenn approved for MaineCare, but he was TURNED DOWN!!!! I see no story here.....just more "fraud" being pulled out of thin air by the far right. First it was voters being trucked in by the busload and now this....
So when Republicans get their supporters to the polls it's "getting the vote out" but when Democrats do it it's "flooding the polls"? That's a spin if I ever heard one......
Why do you think that so many "from away" have moved into the state lately? They find out that it's easy pickings here in Maine (especially in Lewiston) and they let all of their friends and family know.....and we end up footing the bill.
I wonder if the reason the website was taken down was because of the overwhelming support the police officers were being given by people posting in the guestbook? I'm assuming the reason the site was created in the first place was to garner public support for the suspect....and it backfired.
When I saw the "one term is enough" title I was thinking the editorial was going to be about our wonderful governor Lepage and his "accomplishments" i.e. pissing off half of the state. I'm 100% sure that he'll be a 1 term governor.....
take a good look at the Yes on 1 side admitting that they had to stoop to dirty tactics to get their victory in 2009.......Question 1 A Documentary: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Qc2fwGNLv4
I'm not a hunter myself, but I can see the reasoning behind hunting deer, moose, turkey, etc....to put food on your place and help out financially, but killing these beautiful animals for the "passion for the hunt"?
"Collateral Damage"???!! " to the others you reap what you sow"???? You have GOT to be kidding me! So in other words the other people that were wounded and killed deserve it??? Unbelievable!!! This is TOTALLY inappropriate, and it's people like you that feed the fire to these people. SHAME ON YOU!

I don't care what political party they belong to, both Snowe and Collins have done what they were elected to do, put the people of Maine first. I think if Snowe runs again she will have no problem getting re-elected
so candiceanne....EVERY person in L/A voted against the casino?????? I don't think so! There were plenty of us that voted for it.....it was a close call, and if it hadn't been for those of us in Lewiston and Aubrun that DID vote yes it may not have passed.....you should be thanking us!!!!!
How do I like the new medians on Russel street? I think they are GREAT! They help the traffic flow 100% better...I travel that street several times a week and am very thankful for the dedicated turn lanes!
I've been a Democrat all of my adult life, yet when it comes to voting I've always cast my vote for Snowe and Collins because I think that they really care about what is best for Maine.
I've been unemployed and without health insurance for the last six months. I have a savings account, but I'm quickly burning through that (plus my unemployment) for my monthly bills. I've decided to go to school and get a certificate in medical billing/coding, which will take about a year. I just hope that I don't need to see a doctor before I become employed again.
why is it that no matter what the story is, some people always have to inject politics into every thing? The story could be about a fifth grade class trip to a museum and someone will throw something about Bush or Obama or Baldacci into the comments....
So a nonprofit that used city money to buy a van is crying because a kid is cutting in on their territory? Too bad!!! This is the most ridiculous thing I've heard. I agree with Blue Eyes, buy a 3 wheeled pedal bike and give rides.....
Brian_L said "For too long Lewiston & Auburn have played second fiddle to Portland and Augusta.
We need, one, an east-west highway from Brunswick through L/A through NH, VT into NY.
Two, Passenger rail service.
Every politician from the Androscoggin County should be demanding these 2 things."
As you can see, politics plays a big part in this. Yes, passenger rail service from Portland, though L/A, Augusta, and up the I-95 corridor would make sense. So what happens? They extend the DownEaster service to.......... Brunswick???? In what world does that make sense?
I want a job like George Schott, buy the building for 10,000, do a few improvements, then 15 years later sell it back for almost 300,000....now THATS called flipping!
"Not sticking up for Ashley, never need to pull a gun, but what if the woman behind her was riding her bumper and blowing her horn?" Ummm.....pull over and let her go by? If someone is in a hurry behind me and is riding my bumper I just let them go by, saves me a lot of stress and aggrivation that way.
I can see the meeting at the Sun Journal Let's see.....what story should we put at the top of our web page? "BP shares plunge as next Gulf fix gets underway "? naaaaahh "Maine official: Ohio hiker lost seeking shortcut "? Boriiiiiiiiing "Tropical Storm Agatha kills 150 in Central America" ? too depressing. I know! How about "Slackers hope to start slacklining revolution" YEAH!!!
Armymom said "Do not blame the organizers or the marchers, blame the vulgar men." Thats right....blame the men. Men are pigs....always have been, and always will. A little protest by a few naive college girls isn't going to change a thing, except perhaps get a law passed to make it illegal for women to go topless in public.
The Tea Party movement is just a new, shiny, slightly different wrapper for the old, tired ultra-conservative Republican wing. When the Republicans and George Dubya and Company were in charge did you see people calling in death threats to politicians who supported the Iraq War? Or were people protesting in the streets when they were spending millions and millions of dollars on that war? No, because if you did that you would be called a traitor or Un-American. But now that the Republicans are no longer in fashion, they throw a tantrum because they don't get their way like they did in the past 8 years. Their supporters calling in death threats to those who supported universal health care, and whine when unemployment benefits are extended for those who can't find a job. The Tea Partiers are such a vile lot that I hope they nnot only bring themselves down, but also their peas-in-a-pod Republican brothers.
I agree that there should be sound restrictions for motorcycles.....I also think that the police should crack down more on the drivers with car stereos that you can hear 3 blocks away.
Hit and run? This is not a hit and run! First of all, I don't think he should have been talking on the cell phone while backiing out of a parking spot, but as of right now that is not illegal. He did get out of the car to check on her,and he did ask if she was okay...and she said yes. I could see if he had hit her and not even got out to check on her......distracted driving yes, hit and run no way.
no No NO!!!! This is just another way for The State to suck more money out of our pockets rather than trim their spending!!! If I'm planning on making a large purchase, say something a few hundred dollars or more, I'll either A: buy it online, or B: buy it in tax-free New Hampshire. And do I report it on my taxes? no....and why? Because I DIDN'T BUY IT IN MAINE!!!!!
Heaven forbid that children should see an adult drinking! I think there should be a law that says that children should not be allowed to see an adult smoking too, or swearing! This is ridiculous! Next thing you know there will be a law that says same-sex couples cant show PDA's when there is a child within view!
Civil marriage is what we're talking about here, folks...which has NOTHING to do with the church....it's recognized by the STATE. A civil marriage can be performed anywhere....by the ocean, on top of a mountain, without a church in sight....performed by a Justice of the Peace....who has NOTHING to do with a church....yet these marriages are not looked down upon as not being a "real" marriage because they didn't take place in a church with a member of the clergy....why is that? And why is it that the STATE issues marriage license and not the church, hmmmmm? This is a civil issue, not a religious one.

On June 12, 1967, the nation's highest court voted unanimously to overturn the conviction of Richard and Mildred Loving, a young interracial couple from rural Caroline County, Va.
That decision struck down the anti-miscegenation laws — written to prevent the mixing of the races — that were on the books at the time in more than a dozen states, including Virginia.
Richard Loving was white; his wife, Mildred, was black. In 1958, they went to Washington, D.C. — where interracial marriage was legal — to get married. But when they returned home, they were arrested, jailed and banished from the state for 25 years for violating the state's Racial Integrity Act.
To avoid jail, the Lovings agreed to leave Virginia and relocate to Washington.
Lawyer Bernard Cohen challenged the Lovings' conviction, but the original judge in the case upheld his decision. Judge Leon Bazile wrote: "Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, Malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. ... The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix."
As Cohen predicted, the case moved all the way up to the Supreme Court, where the young ACLU attorney made a vivid and personal argument:
"The Lovings have the right to go to sleep at night knowing that if should they not wake in the morning, their children would have the right to inherit from them. They have the right to be secure in knowing that, if they go to sleep and do not wake in the morning, that one of them, a survivor of them, has the right to Social Security benefits. All of these are denied to them, and they will not be denied to them if the whole anti-miscegenistic scheme of Virginia... [is] found unconstitutional."
After the ruling — now known as the "Loving Decision" — the family, which had already quietly moved back to Virginia, finally returned home to Caroline County.
so it wasn't really that long ago that inter racial marriage was illegal.....if the peoples veto was around back then I bet it would still be illegal....which tells me that the majority shouldn't be able to decide how the minority lives....

As someone who was born in Rumford and raised in Mexico, I could never see myself having a reason to live there. I moved away in my early 20's (as did 3 of my 5 siblings). The only reason I had to go back to Rumford on occasion was to visit my parents and my sister. Both of my parents have since passed on, both of cancer. I often wonder if their lifelong exposure to the crap spewing from the mill caused their deaths. The area IS nicknamed "cancer valley" after all., I had mentioned to one sister years ago "I wonder if having moved away so long ago that we dodged that bullet". That aside, even with rock bottom housing costs there are no real employment opportunities there, the alcoholism rates are through the roof, there are no real shopping choices.....Wal Mart? Mardens? I know that Lewiston (my current hometown) is always slammed, but I would rather live here than "cancer valley" any day.
So if the bible says that being gay is wrong, does that also mean that owning slaves is okay? That's what the bible says....how about the Leviticus Holiness codes....According to the codes, a worker must be paid his wage on the day of his labor. A field is never to be harvested to the edge. Two types of yarn are never to be woven into the same cloth. Raw meat is not to be eaten. Tattoos are forbidden. Bigamy is clearly acceptable. Or is it okay to pick and choose what parts of the Bible you choose to live by?
I think it's just more whining from the ultra conservatives in the Republican party that are sore about having lost majority control....check out this Jon Stewart clip.....he has many valid points:
(referring to Republicans) "I think you might be confusing tyranny with losing. And I feel for you because uh, I've been there. A few times...in fact one of them was a bit of a nail biter. But see, when the guy that you disagree with is elected, he's probably going to do things you disagree with. He could cut taxes on the wealthy, remove governments oversight capability, invade a country that you thought should not be invaded, but that's not tyranny....that's democracy." (AKA George W. Bush) "But see, now you're in the minority....it's SUPPOSED to taste like a sh*t taco."
I am an occasional bicyclist, and on those rare occasions when I do go into Lewiston (I live on the outskirts) via Sabattus Street, I ALWAYS ride on the sidewalk. Granted, if there are pedestrians on the sidewalk I yield to them, but there is NO way in hell that I would EVER ride a bike in the road on Sabattus!!!!
I really can't understand how letting gays marry each other is going to affect a straight persons life in any way, shape, or form. These people are always talking about gays wanting "special rights", but from where I stand these people have the "special right" of marriage and don't want to share it gays. And something has always puzzled me.....if marriage is a religious institution, why is it that the state issues marriage licenses and not churches? And why is it that you can get married in a place other than a church, and with someone performing the ceremony that is not part of the church (IE Justice of the Peace) and yet it is still defined as a marriage?
In the park where I live there were some people that moved out of a double wide last year and left their 2 cats behind. By the time they were discovered it was too late. The park ended up leaving the windows open for weeks and replacing all of the flooring. I don't know if they disclose this fact to potential buyers or not....the place is still up for sale.
I found it kind of ironic that this articles shortcut was posted just above one about the Vatican basically giving 2 thumbs up to the newest Harry Potter movie.....
Why Brunswick? I think they should extend the route up through Lewiston/Auburn, Augusta, and up to Bangor.....or is the Maine Turnpike Authority afraid of the competition that would cause???
I agree.....I find the new format very irritating and confusing, and I used to like the old format where you could click on the pix to get a larger one

I don't care what political party they belong to, both Snowe and Collins have done what they were elected to do, put the people of Maine first. I think if Snowe runs again she will have no problem getting re-elected

Instead of state income tax refund checks, Maine will now be issuing Marden's gift cards.

I've been a Democrat all of my adult life, yet when it comes to voting I've always cast my vote for Snowe and Collins because I think that they really care about what is best for Maine.
I've been unemployed and
I've been unemployed and without health insurance for the last six months. I have a savings account, but I'm quickly burning through that (plus my unemployment) for my monthly bills. I've decided to go to school and get a certificate in medical billing/coding, which will take about a year. I just hope that I don't need to see a doctor before I become employed again.
why is it that no matter what
why is it that no matter what the story is, some people always have to inject politics into every thing? The story could be about a fifth grade class trip to a museum and someone will throw something about Bush or Obama or Baldacci into the comments....

I want a job like George
I want a job like George Schott, buy the building for 10,000, do a few improvements, then 15 years later sell it back for almost 300,000....now THATS called flipping!

If someone is in a hurry behind me and is riding my bumper I just let them go by, saves me a lot of stress and aggrivation that way.
Just goes to show that even

You call this newsworthy?
I can see the meeting at the Sun Journal Let's see.....what story should we put at the top of our web page? "BP shares plunge as next Gulf fix gets underway "? naaaaahh "Maine official: Ohio hiker lost seeking shortcut "? Boriiiiiiiiing "Tropical Storm Agatha kills 150 in Central America" ? too depressing. I know! How about "Slackers hope to start slacklining revolution" YEAH!!!

Armymom said "Do not blame
Armymom said "Do not blame the organizers or the marchers, blame the vulgar men." Thats right....blame the men. Men are pigs....always have been, and always will. A little protest by a few naive college girls isn't going to change a thing, except perhaps get a law passed to make it illegal for women to go topless in public.
The Tea Party movement is
The Tea Party movement is just a new, shiny, slightly different wrapper for the old, tired ultra-conservative Republican wing.
Recycling yet another old story

Hit and run? This is not a hit and run! First of all, I don't think he should have been talking on the cell phone while backiing out of a parking spot, but as of right now that is not illegal. He did get out of the car to check on her,and he did ask if she was okay...and she said yes. I could see if he had hit her and not even got out to check on her......distracted driving yes, hit and run no way.
no No NO!!!! This is just
no No NO!!!!
I agree with the mayor 100%!

Heaven forbid that children
Heaven forbid that children should see an adult drinking! I think there should be a law that says that children should not be allowed to see an adult smoking too, or swearing! This is ridiculous! Next thing you know there will be a law that says same-sex couples cant show PDA's when there is a child within view!

Civil marriage is what we're
Civil marriage is what we're talking about here, folks...which has NOTHING to do with the church....it's recognized by the STATE. A civil marriage can be performed anywhere....by the ocean, on top of a mountain, without a church in sight....performed by a Justice of the Peace....who has NOTHING to do with a church....yet these marriages are not looked down upon as not being a "real" marriage because they didn't take place in a church with a member of the clergy....why is that? And why is it that the STATE issues marriage license and not the church, hmmmmm? This is a civil issue, not a religious one.

On June 12, 1967, the
On June 12, 1967, the nation's highest court voted unanimously to overturn the conviction of Richard and Mildred Loving, a young interracial couple from rural Caroline County, Va.

As someone who was born in
As someone who was born in Rumford and raised in Mexico, I could never see myself having a reason to live there.
So if the bible says that
So if the bible says that being gay is wrong, does that also mean that owning slaves is okay? That's what the bible says....how about the Leviticus Holiness codes....According to the codes, a worker must be paid his wage on the day of his labor. A field is never to be harvested to the edge. Two types of yarn are never to be woven into the same cloth. Raw meat is not to be eaten. Tattoos are forbidden. Bigamy is clearly acceptable. Or is it okay to pick and choose what parts of the Bible you choose to live by?

I think it's just more
I think it's just more whining from the ultra conservatives in the Republican party that are sore about having lost majority control....check out this Jon Stewart clip.....he has many valid points:

(referring to Republicans) "I think you might be confusing tyranny with losing. And I feel for you because uh, I've been there. A few times...in fact one of them was a bit of a nail biter. But see, when the guy that you disagree with is elected, he's probably going to do things you disagree with. He could cut taxes on the wealthy, remove governments oversight capability, invade a country that you thought should not be invaded, but that's not tyranny....that's democracy." (AKA George W. Bush) "But see, now you're in the minority....it's SUPPOSED to taste like a sh*t taco."
I also agree with some of
I also agree with some of the other comments, such as when there is no shoulder on the road and 2 cyclists are riding side by side!!!
I am an occasional
I am an occasional bicyclist, and on those rare occasions when I do go into Lewiston (I live on the outskirts) via Sabattus Street, I ALWAYS ride on the sidewalk. Granted, if there are pedestrians on the sidewalk I yield to them, but there is NO way in hell that I would EVER ride a bike in the road on Sabattus!!!!
Against gay marriage? Don't
Against gay marriage? Don't marry one!
I really can't understand
I really can't understand how letting gays marry each other is going to affect a straight persons life in any way, shape, or form. These people are always talking about gays wanting "special rights", but from where I stand these people have the "special right" of marriage and don't want to share it gays. And something has always puzzled me.....if marriage is a religious institution, why is it that the state issues marriage licenses and not churches? And why is it that you can get married in a place other than a church, and with someone performing the ceremony that is not part of the church (IE Justice of the Peace) and yet it is still defined as a marriage?
In the park where I live
In the park where I live there were some people that moved out of a double wide last year and left their 2 cats behind. By the time they were discovered it was too late. The park ended up leaving the windows open for weeks and replacing all of the flooring. I don't know if they disclose this fact to potential buyers or not....the place is still up for sale.
I meant as far as "the
I meant as far as "the sanctity of marriage" and all.....not being wed in a church and wearing "untraditional" attire and such.....
and I wonder what all of the
and I wonder what all of the folks against gay marriage think of this one.....
I found it kind of ironic
I found it kind of ironic that this articles shortcut was posted just above one about the Vatican basically giving 2 thumbs up to the newest Harry Potter movie.....
Sounds like skippy wants to
Sounds like skippy wants to keep marriage a "special right" for heterosexuals. "Equal but separate" has been tried before, and it just doesn't work.
